If your organic traffic is flat or falling while your rankings hold, zero click searches are the most likely explanation: more questions are now answered on the results page or in an AI assistant. This article is for CEOs, founders and revenue leaders at B2B companies whose pipeline starts with search.

You will get the facts from the original studies, what they mean for your pipeline, and a plan: keep the click where you need it, become the cited source elsewhere, and measure answers next to traffic. Our guide to [AI Engine Optimization (AEO)](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/ultimate-guide-ai-engine-optimization) covers the wider discipline, which the market also calls answer engine optimization.

| **Zero-Click Search** A zero-click search is a search where the answer appears on the results page or in an AI assistant, so the person gets what they need without clicking through to any website. |
| --- |

## What zero-click searches look like on the results page

Zero click results take several forms, and search engines have shown answers directly in the search results for years. You have probably seen all of these:

- A featured snippet that quotes one page's answer at the top of the Google search results.
- A knowledge panel that summarizes a company, person or concept beside the results, often the first thing a buyer reads about your brand.
- Instant answers and direct answers for simple questions, from definitions to conversions.
- A voice search answer read aloud by a phone or speaker.
- A Google AI Overview, or an answer in Google AI Mode, that pulls several sources together and links to some of them.
- An answer from an assistant such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot or Claude, where the person never opens a search engine results page at all.

The newest layers matter most to you, because they answer comparison and how-to questions, not only simple facts. Google introduced the idea in May 2023 as a Search Labs experiment called [Search Generative Experience](https://blog.google/products/search/generative-ai-search/), then began rolling out AI Overviews to everyone in the U.S. in [May 2024](https://blog.google/products/search/generative-ai-google-search-may-2024/).

## What has changed in how B2B buyers get answers

Your buyers used to type a question into Google, scan the search results and click into an article on your site. That sequence now breaks early. They read a summary on the results page, or they ask an assistant, and the answer arrives before your site loads.

As zero click searches rise, the first stage of research, where a buyer learns who the players are, happens in an answer you did not write. Google said in March 2025 that it sees [more than 5 trillion searches on Google annually](https://blog.google/products/ads-commerce/ai-personalization-and-the-future-of-shopping/), so how answers are displayed touches a lot of buyer questions.

Buying teams also use artificial intelligence to summarize long pages and reviews into a shortlist, and AI search is part of their buying process. You see less time on site, fewer page views and fewer form fills from organic search. Prospects still reach sales, but often later and with a view already formed.

## What the original studies say about zero-click searches

![Three primary sources on zero-click searches and what each one measures. Pew Research Center: Fewer clicks when an AI summary appeared. Worth noting: Google only; One U.S. panel; Browsing tracked in 2025. A browsing-panel study: How many searches end with no click. Worth noting: U.S. and EU users; Ends before AI Overviews began; Not an AI Overviews figure. Google: Disputes the traffic-loss reading. Worth noting: Total clicks relatively stable; Traffic moves between sites; Said by its head of Search.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/AEO/Awareness/Zero-Click%20Searches%20-%20What%20AI%20Overviews%20Mean%20for%20Your%20B2B%20Pipeline/zero-click-searches-ai-overviews-b2b-three-sources-map-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=zero-click-searches-ai-overviews-b2b-three-sources-map-blog-1600x900.png)

This field is full of misquoted numbers, so here are three primary sources, with who measured what, on which sample and when. None of them is a loss rate for your site.

### Pew Research Center found fewer clicks when an AI summary appeared

Pew Research Center tracked the browsing of 900 U.S. adults in March 2025, covering [68,879 Google searches](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/07/22/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results/), and published its analysis in July 2025. On visits where Google showed an AI summary, people clicked a traditional result link in 8% of visits, against 15% on visits without one, according to [Pew Research Center's 2025 analysis](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/07/22/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results/).

The same analysis found that people clicked a link inside the summary in 1% of visits to pages that had one, and ended their browsing session on 26% of those pages, against 16% of pages with only traditional results, [Pew reports](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/07/22/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results/). It measured Google only, on one U.S. panel.

### SparkToro measured how many searches end with no click

SparkToro, using browsing panel data from users in the U.S. and EU, reported in July 2024 that [58.5% of U.S. Google searches ended with no click](https://sparktoro.com/blog/2024-zero-click-search-study-for-every-1000-us-google-searches-only-374-clicks-go-to-the-open-web-in-the-eu-its-360/). [The panel covers September 2022 to May 2024](https://sparktoro.com/blog/2024-zero-click-search-study-for-every-1000-us-google-searches-only-374-clicks-go-to-the-open-web-in-the-eu-its-360/), which ends in the month Google began rolling out AI Overviews in the U.S.

That figure counts every search with no click, including searches where people changed their query instead. It does not mean the question went unanswered, and it is not an AI Overviews figure.

### Google disputes the traffic-loss reading

Google's head of Search, Liz Reid, wrote in August 2025 that [total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been relatively stable year over year](https://blog.google/products/search/ai-search-driving-more-queries-higher-quality-clicks/). She said third-party reports suggesting dramatic declines in aggregate traffic are inaccurate.

The same post adds that traffic is moving between sites: some lose visits and others gain. Read the three sources together and you get the honest picture. Click behavior changes when an answer is shown, and your own data, not an industry average, decides how much that costs your business.

## What zero-click searches mean for your digital marketing and pipeline

![The answer comes first, and four things shift around it. Fewer visits: Informational queries send fewer sessions. First impression: It forms inside an answer you do not control. Attribution: It undercounts your influence. Informed buyers: They arrive later, often with a shortlist.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/AEO/Awareness/Zero-Click%20Searches%20-%20What%20AI%20Overviews%20Mean%20for%20Your%20B2B%20Pipeline/zero-click-searches-ai-overviews-b2b-answer-before-click-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=zero-click-searches-ai-overviews-b2b-answer-before-click-blog-1600x900.png)

When search starts your pipeline, four things shift at once. Each one is a design problem for your go-to-market system, not only a traffic problem.

### Informational queries send fewer visits

Zero click searches mean educational and definitional queries no longer deliver sessions the way they used to, and declining referral traffic can hit even pages that hold top organic positions. Stable rankings next to flat organic traffic is the pattern an answer taking the click leaves behind.

### Your first impression forms inside an answer you do not control

The first meeting with your brand now often happens inside an AI answer that compresses or paraphrases your message. You cannot edit that answer. You can only make your own explanations clear, consistent and easy to quote, which is the work of AEO. If you suspect your brand is absent from those answers, [AI search visibility](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/ai-search-visibility-brand-missing) explains how to check and why it happens.

### Attribution undercounts your influence

A buyer who learns about you in an answer and later types your name shows up as direct traffic, so dashboards credit the visit, not the answer. Google reports AI Overviews and AI Mode inside the Web search type of the Search Console Performance report, [according to Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features), not as a separate line.

### Buyers arrive later and better informed

The buyers who do contact you tend to arrive with a formed view of the problem and often a shortlist. That is good news for conversation quality and hard news for you if your sales story repeats what they already read. You now have to start where the answer left off.

Each leader sees a different part of this:

- **CEO:** Decide whether zero click behavior is a reporting gap or a structural change that needs GTM design, new measures and a budget line.
- **CRO:** Build sales narratives on what buyers already learned from AI answers, and qualify leads who skip your usual educational content.
- **Marketing leader:** Decide which topics still earn clicks in your digital marketing plan and which exist to be present in answers.
- **Customer success leader:** Use documentation and enablement content to shape what buyers know before they sign, and prepare for better-informed customers.

## What you gain when you plan for zero-click searches

### Sales spends more time with ready buyers

When you stop trying to drag early researchers onto your site and shape what they see where they are, reps spend less time on basic education. Buyers already grasp the problem and the category, so conversations focus on context, risk and fit.

### Marketing earns influence that is larger than its traffic

Your digital marketing shapes the answers buyers see, which influences who makes the shortlist even when no visit lands. Campaigns are planned around the whole learning journey, and measurement ties to opportunities through [demand generation](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/what-is-demand-generation) programs, not pageviews alone.

### Customer success sets expectations before the contract

Clear documentation, onboarding guides and plain descriptions of what good looks like become part of pre-sale research. Buyers arrive with realistic expectations of implementation, timelines and responsibilities, which reduces friction after signature and makes expansion conversations easier.

## Decide which queries you still need the click for

![The decision, made query by query: do we need the visit for pipeline? If no, an answer on the page is fine, so be present in the answer; this covers educational and definitional queries. If yes, we need the visit, so bring the buyer to a landing page of your own; this covers pricing and packages, integrations, implementation timelines and procurement requirements.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/AEO/Awareness/Zero-Click%20Searches%20-%20What%20AI%20Overviews%20Mean%20for%20Your%20B2B%20Pipeline/zero-click-searches-ai-overviews-b2b-query-portfolio-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=zero-click-searches-ai-overviews-b2b-query-portfolio-blog-1600x900.png)

This is a portfolio decision, not a guess. Start by listing your queries by intent: informational, problem framing, solution exploration, vendor comparison, pricing and implementation. Then mark each one as "an answer on the page is fine" or "we need the visit for pipeline."

- Queries tied to revenue need the click: pricing, packages, integrations, implementation timelines and procurement requirements.
- For these, bring potential customers to a landing page of your own so you can qualify them, explain the nuance and start a structured conversation.
- Use HubSpot data to see which entry pages most often appear in journeys that become opportunities, and protect those from an answer-and-leave pattern.
- Give those pages a clear next step, such as talking to sales, booking a working session or opening a buying guide.

## Become the cited source where the click no longer matters

For definitional and educational queries, your goal shifts to being the voice inside the answer. You cannot guarantee inclusion, and no tactic promises it, but you can make your content easier and safer for an engine to quote. How engines choose which pages to cite is explained in [AI search ranking factors](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/ai-search-ranking-factors), so you know what to improve.

Google says its [SEO best practices remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features), that a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to appear as a supporting link, and that no special schema.org markup is required. Structured data still helps machines read a page, but it is not a switch.

- Write plain, accurate definitions of your category's key concepts, and put each one near the top of the page that explains it.
- Use the same terminology across your blog, product pages, documentation and leadership writing, so every source reinforces one message.
- Earn independent validation, for example analyst commentary, conference talks, podcasts and press that repeat your framing and build your authority.
- Use clear headings, short summaries and bullet points in long articles, so a person or an engine can lift a clean passage, the same habit that helps a page win a featured snippet.
- Add formats beyond text where a page benefits, such as short videos or interactive polls, and keep email and social channels running so you are not dependent on organic search alone.

## How SEO changes when the answer comes first

Traditional SEO still matters, because the pages that answer well must first be indexed and eligible to appear. For a side by side view of both disciplines, read [AEO vs SEO](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/aeo-vs-seo) and decide where to put your budget. For digital marketing teams, what changes is the unit of success. For informational queries you are optimizing a page to be the clearest passage on the topic, not only to hold the top position.

Long tail keywords, the specific questions your buyers type, are where answers appear first, so they are where your content strategy needs the most care. Put direct answers in plain sentences under question headings, back them with depth below, and send the decision to a page built for it.

A featured snippet and an AI Overview both quote or summarize pages, so clear structure, consistent terms and evidence a reader can check help in both. Engines that retrieve live pages tend to quote passages that answer the question directly, which is a reason to write that way, not a promise of a citation.

## Measure presence in answers alongside traffic

Your measurement has to capture influence that does not arrive as a click. Anchor every metric to pipeline in HubSpot, so leadership conversations stay on revenue and not on vanity counts.

- Watch impressions next to clicks for your top informational queries. Where impressions hold and clicks fall, zero click searches are doing the most work.
- Spot-check your critical questions in Google and in AI search tools to see whether your brand, language or content appears in the answer.
- Consider an AI visibility tracker to record that presence over time, and treat its output as a sample, not a census.
- Track branded search, direct visits and self-reported attribution in HubSpot forms as signs of answer influence you cannot see directly.
- Line these leading signals up with opportunity creation and win rates.

## Where to start this quarter

You can begin without buying new software. Use the data, teams and content you already have.

1. Compare impressions and clicks for your top informational queries. Flag the ones where clicks fell while visibility held, and treat them as assets whose job is influence, not sessions.
2. Pick three revenue-critical journeys and write down the questions buyers ask at each step. Decide which you want answered on the page and which should bring the buyer to you.
3. Rewrite a small set of core explanations in your category with clearer structure and summaries, then align sales and customer success playbooks to the same wording.

## Zero-click searches are a design constraint, not a verdict

Zero click searches change where the first impression forms, not whether buyers have problems worth solving. The teams that stay ahead adapt: they stop chasing every lost visit, keep the click where revenue depends on it, and make their expertise the clearest answer everywhere else.

## Frequently asked questions

 What is zero click marketing?

Zero click marketing is earning attention, trust and preference inside answers, snippets, panels and social posts, where people may never visit your site. You measure it through brand mentions, branded search and pipeline influence rather than sessions, and you keep click-focused pages for the decisions that still need a visit.

Is SEO dead because of AI Overviews?

No. Google's documentation says SEO best practices remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to be linked. What changes is the goal: for some queries you are working to be quoted, not visited.

How can I tell if zero-click searches are hurting my site?

Compare impressions and clicks for your top informational queries over time. Stable impressions with falling clicks point to answers on the page. Then check branded search, direct visits and opportunity creation in HubSpot. If demand holds while sessions fall, zero click searches are a likely cause, not lost interest.

Should I stop creating educational content if clicks are falling?

No. Change its job. Write some pieces to be quoted and remembered rather than to capture visits, with clear structure and consistent wording. Connect those topics to product pages and buying guides that still drive pipeline, so buyers who want more detail have somewhere useful to go next.

What role does HubSpot play in managing zero-click impact?

HubSpot becomes the system of record that connects scattered signals: self-reported attribution, lifecycle stages, opportunities and revenue. It lets you judge whether your presence in answers still supports pipeline when sessions fall, which keeps leadership conversations grounded in revenue and not in pageviews.
