If you lead marketing or revenue at a B2B company, you have probably published plenty of articles that each did their own thing. Topic clusters are a way to make those articles work as a set. A topic cluster is one pillar page on a broad subject, linked with the cluster pages that cover its narrower questions in depth.

This article is for marketing leaders, founders and content owners. It explains what topic clusters are, how the topic cluster model works, why search engines and AI answer engines reward depth, how to plan one, how to link the pages and which mistakes to avoid.

| **Topic Cluster** A topic cluster is a group of pages on one subject, made of a pillar page that covers the broad topic and cluster pages that each answer one narrower question and link back to the pillar. |
| --- |

## Why topic clusters matter for search and AI answers

A single article can answer a single question. A buyer rarely stops there. They ask what something is, how it compares, how to start, what goes wrong and what to measure.

When your site answers all of those questions in connected pages, search engines understand what your site covers. That is the idea behind topical authority: a site that covers a subject thoroughly, and shows how the pieces relate, is easier to place than a site with one lonely article.

Google's own documentation says it uses links "as a signal when determining the relevancy of pages and to find new pages to crawl." Links between your pages are therefore part of how a search engine reads your site structure.

AI answer engines add a second reason. Google's guide to AI features says AI Overviews and AI Mode "may use a 'query fan-out' technique," issuing multiple related searches across subtopics to build a response. A cluster that already covers the related subtopics gives Google AI Overviews and other AI search tools more than one useful page to find, plus related cluster pages to follow.

The same guide says there are no additional requirements to appear in these features, and that the fundamentals of SEO still apply. A topic cluster is a way of doing those fundamentals on purpose.

## How the topic cluster model works

![A hub for the pillar page with four spokes: definition, how-to, comparison and long-tail cluster pages.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/SEO/Awareness/Topic%20Clusters%20-%20What%20They%20Are%20and%20How%20to%20Plan%20One%20for%20B2B/sk08-topic-cluster-spoke-hub-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=sk08-topic-cluster-spoke-hub-blog-1600x900.png)

The topic cluster model is an SEO and content strategy framework that organizes content around a broad subject. A topic cluster includes one pillar page and multiple subpages, joined by internal links. The pillar is the hub. Each cluster page is a spoke that goes deep on one related subtopic, so each cluster covers several related subtopics in depth.

The pillar page gives a complete overview of the core topic and sends readers to the right cluster page when they want detail. Each cluster page answers one specific question and links back to the pillar. Cluster pages also link to each other where a reader would naturally move sideways.

The result is a content cluster that a reader can enter at any page and still find the rest. A newcomer starts at the pillar. A buyer with a narrow question lands on a cluster page and then moves up to the broader view.

### What a pillar page does

A pillar page covers a broad topic at a useful level, usually with a table of contents so readers can jump to the part they need. It is not a dumping ground for every detail. It names each subtopic, explains it briefly and links to the page that covers it fully.

Pillar page content should be the page you would send a new colleague to read first. Pillar content like this works as the main page for the related pages around it. If a section grows too long, it probably deserves its own cluster page.

### What cluster pages do

Cluster pages answer one question each. A good cluster page has a single clear search intent, such as a definition, a how-to or a comparison. It stays on that question, then links back to the pillar and to one or two related cluster pages.

Because each page targets a specific keyword, cluster pages avoid competing with each other. The pillar can target a high-volume, competitive keyword. The supporting pages target its narrower variations, including long-tail keywords and the search queries around them. Cluster content like this lets you cover distinct search intents related to one broad topic.

## Benefits of topic clusters for topical authority and semantic search

An SEO topic cluster organizes your content marketing strategy around real user intent instead of isolated keywords. That matters because modern search engines rely on semantic search: they try to understand what a page means and how it relates to other pages, not only which words it repeats.

Several benefits of topic clusters follow from that structure.

- **Topical relevance.** Multiple pages on related topics show how deeply your site covers a subject, which gives search engines more to judge topical relevance from.
- **Clear signals to search engines.** Cluster links and pillar links are signals to search engines about which page is the main one and which pages support it.
- **Easier navigation.** Readers move between related pages without searching again, which makes the site easier to use and gives your target audience relevant content in one path.
- **Less overlap.** When two pages target the same keyword they compete with each other, which is called keyword cannibalization. Giving each page a unique focus and a clear place in the structure avoids it.
- **A plan for content creation.** The cluster map helps with content planning: it shows gaps and aligns different topics with different reader needs, so writers know which supporting pages are still missing.

To build topical authority, quality content matters more than page count. Each supporting page needs to answer its question well. A cluster of thin pages adds links but not substance.

Search visibility also depends on more than structure. Search results change, and search rankings are never guaranteed. A topic cluster strategy shapes how your digital marketing efforts fit together. It does not replace helpful writing, technical basics or patience.

## Topic clusters, content hubs and pillar pages: how the terms differ

These terms overlap, and people use them loosely. In this article they mean the following.

A pillar page is one page. A topic cluster is the pillar plus its cluster pages and links. A content hub is often used for a section of a site that gathers related content, which may or may not follow the pillar and cluster pattern.

The practical difference is the linking rule. In a topic cluster, every cluster page links back to the pillar, and the pillar links out to every cluster page. A list of related posts with no clear center is a collection, not a cluster.

Topic clusters also differ from keyword lists. A keyword list groups search phrases. A cluster is a set of published pages built around a core topic and a plan for how they connect.

## How to plan a topic cluster for B2B in five steps

![One route through five steps in three groups: define, map and publish.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/SEO/Awareness/Topic%20Clusters%20-%20What%20They%20Are%20and%20How%20to%20Plan%20One%20for%20B2B/sk08-plan-topic-cluster-path-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=sk08-plan-topic-cluster-path-blog-1600x900.png)

Building a topic cluster starts on paper, before anyone writes. These steps show how to create topic clusters that fit most B2B teams, and they are the core of a practical topic cluster strategy.

### 1. Choose a core topic tied to a buying problem

Pick a broad topic that your buyers care about and that you can cover with real expertise. Choose a core topic broad enough for multiple subtopics, because a topic with only one question does not need a cluster. For a B2B company, the best core topic usually sits next to a problem your product or service solves.

Done looks like this: one sentence naming the core topic and the buyer who searches for it.

### 2. Run keyword research and group related keywords

Use keyword research tools to list keyword ideas, questions and search phrases around the core topic. Search engine results pages for each phrase show what searchers expect to find, and related topics often appear there. Note the search volume of each, but do not let it decide alone. A phrase with a small audience can still be the exact question a buyer asks before a purchase.

Then group related keywords by meaning. Grouping keywords this way shows which phrases belong on one page and which need their own.

Done looks like this: a list of keyword groups, each one tied to a single question.

### 3. Match each group to a search intent

Look at the search engine results for each group. Do the search results show definitions, step-by-step guides or comparisons? That tells you the search intent and the type of page that fits.

Assign each group a page type, then decide which group is the pillar and which are cluster pages.

Done looks like this: a map with one pillar and a handful of cluster pages, each with a page type and a target keyword.

### 4. Audit your existing content first

Before you write anything new, check what you already have. Existing content on the topic can often be updated and placed in the cluster. Pages that overlap may need to be merged so they stop competing.

Done looks like this: every existing page on the topic is marked keep, update, merge or retire.

### 5. Write, publish and link in a deliberate order

Create quality content that is useful and relevant to readers. Write the pages in the order that serves readers best, then add the internal links as each page goes live, so that internal links connect every cluster page to the pillar page. Update the pillar each time a new cluster page is published so it points to the newest page.

Done looks like this: every cluster page links to the pillar, the pillar links to every cluster page, and each cluster page links to at least one sibling. After launch, measure cluster performance with the content marketing metrics you already track, such as impressions and clicks in Google Search Console.

## Internal links inside a cluster

The links are what turn separate pages into a cluster. Internal links connect all pages within a topic cluster, and they give search engines a path to crawl and find each page. Strategic internal links also help readers move from a broad question to a precise one without a search box.

Google's link guidance says good anchor text is "descriptive, reasonably concise, and relevant to the page that it's on and to the page it links to." Generic phrases such as "click here" tell neither readers nor search engines what the next page covers.

Use descriptive anchor text that names the topic of the page you link to. Keep it short, and write it so it reads naturally in the sentence.

Three linking habits keep a cluster healthy:

- Every cluster page links back to the pillar, and the pillar links to every cluster page.
- Cluster pages link to each other only when a reader would want that next step.
- Links use standard HTML anchor elements, so search engines can crawl them.

Google's AI features guide also lists making your content easily findable through internal links as a fundamental practice. The links you add to a cluster serve that goal directly.

## A topic cluster example for a B2B company

Here is an illustrative cluster, not a result from any client. Suppose a company that sells to revenue teams chooses "SEO strategy" as its core topic.

The pillar page explains what SEO is and how the parts fit together. Cluster pages then cover narrower questions: how to build an SEO strategy, how SEO differs from answer engine optimization, how entity authority works and how brand mentions compare with backlinks.

Propello's own library follows this pattern. Our guides start from a pillar on a broad subject and connect to supporting articles on its parts. For SEO, you can start with [what SEO is and how it works](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/what-is-seo-and-how-does-it-work), then read [how to build an SEO strategy](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/how-to-build-an-seo-strategy).

To see how the discipline relates to AI search, read [AEO vs SEO](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/aeo-vs-seo). For the signals that tell search systems who you are, see [knowledge graph SEO and entity authority](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/knowledge-graph-seo-entity-authority) and [brand mentions vs backlinks](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/brand-mentions-vs-backlinks).

Each of those pages answers one question, and each one makes more sense when read as part of the set.

## Common mistakes with topic clusters

![Four stage cards, plan, write, link and keep current, with six common mistakes with topic clusters.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/SEO/Awareness/Topic%20Clusters%20-%20What%20They%20Are%20and%20How%20to%20Plan%20One%20for%20B2B/sk08-topic-cluster-mistakes-leaks-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=sk08-topic-cluster-mistakes-leaks-blog-1600x900.png)

Most failed clusters fail for the same few reasons. These are worth checking before you publish.

- **Pages that compete.** Two cluster pages aimed at the same keyword force search engines to choose between them. Give each page one distinct question.
- **A pillar that is only a list of links.** The pillar should teach the topic, not just point away from it.
- **Links in one direction.** If cluster pages never link back, the cluster is a set of orphans.
- **Writing for volume, not for questions.** More pages do not make a better cluster. Pages that answer real buyer questions do.
- **Never updating.** A cluster is a living structure. Add pages as new questions appear, and update the pillar to match.
- **Ignoring the buyer's stage.** A cluster that only covers definitions leaves buyers without comparison and how-to content when they are ready to decide.

## What you gain when this is done properly

A cluster planned around real buyer questions gives each team something specific. None of this depends on a promise about rankings. It comes from having the content organized.

### Sales gains pages worth sending

Sales can send a buyer one precise cluster page instead of a general link to the blog. When a prospect asks a narrow question, the answer already exists and it connects to the broader picture.

### Marketing gains a plan, not a pile

Marketing gets a map. Content marketers can see which questions are covered, which are missing and which pages overlap. That makes the content strategy easier to prioritize and easier to explain.

### Customer success gains reusable answers

Customer success can point customers to the same pages that buyers read. A well-linked cluster also makes onboarding questions easier to answer without writing a new document each time.

## Turn your content into a connected system

A topic cluster is a content version of a principle that applies across go-to-market work: parts that connect do more than parts that stand alone. Planning clusters is easier when your data on what buyers ask is in one place.

Propello designs and builds connected go-to-market systems on HubSpot. Propello is a [HubSpot partner](https://www.finemediabw.com/about-us). If you want help mapping the topics your buyers search for to the pages you need, an audit is the place to start.

## Frequently asked questions

 What are topic clusters?

Topic clusters are groups of connected pages on one subject. A pillar page covers the broad topic, and cluster pages each answer a narrower question in depth. The pages link to each other so readers and search engines can see how the subject fits together.

How many pages should a topic cluster have?

There is no required number. A cluster should have one pillar page and as many cluster pages as there are distinct buyer questions on the topic. Start with the questions that matter most, then add pages as new questions appear and the topic grows.

Are topic clusters still relevant with AI search?

Yes. Google's guidance says SEO fundamentals still apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, and it notes that these features may run related searches across subtopics. A cluster covers those related subtopics in connected pages, which makes your content easy to find and use.

What is the difference between a pillar page and a cluster page?

A pillar page covers a broad topic and links to every cluster page. A cluster page answers one narrower question in depth and links back to the pillar. The pillar gives the overview, and the cluster pages give the detail.

How do I link pages inside a topic cluster?

Link the pillar to every cluster page, and link each cluster page back to the pillar. Add links between cluster pages only where a reader would want that next step. Use descriptive anchor text that names the page you are linking to.
