If you lead marketing or revenue at a growing B2B company, PPC attribution is how you find out which ads, campaigns and keywords produced closed deals, not just clicks. You get there by connecting your Google Ads account to HubSpot, tagging every ad, and tying each contact to the deal it became.

This article is for CEOs, founders, CROs and marketing leaders who pay for PPC campaigns and cannot yet say what the ad spend returned. You will get a definition, the five links in the chain, the metrics and formulas that turn spend into revenue, and a weekly, monthly and quarterly routine.

| **PPC Attribution** PPC attribution is the practice of assigning credit for leads, deals and revenue to the paid ads, campaigns and keywords that influenced them, using an attribution model to split credit across touchpoints. |
| --- |

## PPC advertising pays back only when you can follow the customer journey

In pay per click advertising, advertisers bid for placement and advertisers pay when someone clicks. Ads appear on search engine results pages when a person types search terms that match your keywords, and on social media platforms and YouTube. A PPC campaign holds ad groups, and each ad group holds keywords and ads.

Conversion tracking in Google Ads records online actions such as form submissions and purchases. Platform reports stop at the conversion actions you define.

They cannot say which PPC ads led to a signed contract months later, or how marketing channels combined across a customer journey with multiple touchpoints. PPC attribution answers that by joining Google Ads data to your CRM records.

Without it, campaign performance is judged by the conversions a platform reports, not by the business goals those conversions were meant to serve.

## Good PPC attribution lets you name the deals each campaign produced

If your answer to which ads paid for themselves is a click count, attribution is not working yet. Clicks and leads are early signals. Revenue sits at the end of a journey that runs from the top of the sales funnel through sales, often over months.

A team with working PPC attribution has five things in place:

- Every ad link carries campaign tags, so a visit can be traced to the ad that earned it.
- Form submissions create contacts that keep their ad source.
- Contacts are associated with deals, and closed-won deals carry an amount and a close date.
- Your team knows which attribution model each report uses and why.
- Ad spend and revenue sit in one report that sales and marketing both trust.

The rest of this article builds those five things in order.

## Integrate HubSpot with Google Ads: five links must hold for PPC attribution

![One route through five steps in three stages: connect the ad account and switch on tracking, capture contacts and close deals with their details, then send conversion events back.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/Paid%20Acquisition/Optimization/PPC%20Attribution%20-%20How%20to%20Trace%20Ad%20Spend%20to%20Revenue%20in%20HubSpot/lp13-ppc-attribution-chain-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=lp13-ppc-attribution-chain-blog-1600x900.png)

A click turns into attributed revenue only if every link below holds. A break at any link leaves a gap you will later misread as a weak campaign.

The aim is simple: Google Ads data on one side, deal data on the other, and conversion tracking that joins them. When you integrate HubSpot with Google Ads, tracking gains a deal-level view that the ad platform alone cannot provide.

### Integrate HubSpot with your Google Ads account

To integrate HubSpot with Google Ads, open Settings, choose Marketing, then Ads, and connect your Google Ads account. HubSpot's own page on how to [connect your Google Ads account to HubSpot](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/ads/connect-your-google-ads-account-to-hubspot) lists the requirements. You need Publish access to the ads tool in HubSpot and Admin access to the individual Google Ads account.

Only individual accounts connect, not manager accounts. Turn off ad blockers in your browser while you connect and while you use the ads tool. Once connected, your existing campaigns appear in HubSpot, and you can also [create and manage Google search ad campaigns](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/ads/create-google-search-ad-campaigns-in-hubspot) there.

Done looks like this: the Ads page in HubSpot lists your account and its campaigns. If it does not, HubSpot's [troubleshooting guide](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/ads/troubleshoot-your-google-ads-account-connection) points to the wrong signed-in Google user, a missing admin role, damaged app permissions or an ad blocker.

### Turn on auto-tracking and keep campaign tags clean

HubSpot's [ad tracking page](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/ads/ad-tracking-in-hubspot) explains that tracking lets HubSpot attribute contacts to specific ads by applying tracking parameters to the end of your ad URLs. By default these are UTM parameters. Enable auto-tracking for each ad account under Settings, Marketing, Ads.

HubSpot can only attribute contacts to ads they clicked after auto-tracking is enabled. Clicks made earlier stay unattributed, so switch it on before you judge any campaign.

If you tag links yourself, follow one naming pattern across all PPC campaigns. Our guide to [what a UTM code is](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/what-is-a-utm-code) shows how to build and govern those tags, and HubSpot's [tracking URL builder](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/reports/track-google-ads-in-hubspot-without-the-ads-tool) requires a campaign name.

Google adds its own tag. According to Google's [auto-tagging help](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/3095550?hl=en), auto-tagging appends a click identifier called a GCLID to the landing page URL. If your site uses redirects, make sure the GCLID reaches the final page, or conversion tracking will miss the click.

Done looks like this: you open a live ad, click it, and the landing page URL shows the campaign tags and the click identifier.

### Capture the visit as a contact on every form

Attribution starts when a tracked visitor becomes a contact. HubSpot's page on [why its data differs from ad networks](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/articles/kcs_article/reports/why-does-the-data-in-hubspot-not-match-adwords-linkedin-or-facebook) says it attributes a contact to your ad when requirements are met, including a first-time form submission in the same session as the ad click. HubSpot also needs a tracking cookie tied to the visitor.

So every landing page needs the HubSpot tracking code and a HubSpot form. A form built elsewhere may leave the ad source behind. Test with a real ad click and confirm the new contact shows the campaign.

### Associate contacts with deals and close them properly

Revenue reaches the ad report only through deals. HubSpot's page on [configuring ROI for paid ads](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/ads/configure-the-calculation-of-roi-for-paid-ad-campaigns) says a deal counts only if it is closed won and associated with a contact attributed to your ad campaign. That contact must also be in the default Customer lifecycle stage.

If your team uses a custom lifecycle stage as its Customer stage, the page says those deals are not included. Sales should also record an amount and a close date on every closed-won deal, because the attribution reports need both.

Done looks like this: every closed-won deal has an amount, a close date and at least one associated contact.

### Send conversion events back to Google Ads

The first four links trace revenue back to the ad. This one feeds the result of the integration back, so the ad platform can optimize for the desired action: a customer, not a form fill.

HubSpot can [create and sync ad conversion events](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/ads/create-and-sync-ad-conversion-events-with-your-google-ads-account) so lifecycle stage changes reach your Google Ads account as conversion actions. Your bidding can then learn from qualified leads and customers, not only from form submissions. Offline conversion data can give automated bidding a better signal than a form fill.

Two details matter. Only lifecycle stage changes made after you create the event are counted, and a contact needs a click identifier or shared contact data to sync.

Google's [offline conversion import page](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/7012522?hl=en) explains the principle: store the click identifier with each lead, then report the conversion later. It requires a click-to-conversion cycle of less than 14 days or 90 days, depending on the data source, so long sales cycles need a plan.

## Pick the PPC attribution model that matches the question you are asking

A PPC attribution model is the rule that decides how credit is split when a customer journey has multiple touchpoints. No attribution model is the truth. Each answers a different question, so choose the PPC attribution model by the decision you need to make.

Google Ads documents two models. According to its [attribution models page](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/6259715?hl=en), last click gives all credit to the last-clicked ad and its keyword, so the last touchpoint is the only one that counts.

Data-driven attribution, which distributes credit based on your past data, is the default model for most conversion actions. The first click, linear, time decay and position-based models are no longer supported.

Data-driven attribution needs volume, because the model learns from your own conversion paths. Google's [switch to data-driven attribution page](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/10762625?hl=en) says some types of conversion actions need 3,000 ad interactions and 300 conversions over 30 days. The model you pick also changes how automated bidding optimizes, so treat a change as a bidding change.

HubSpot works at the contact and deal level. Its [attribution reporting definitions](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/reports/understand-attribution-reporting) describe first interaction, last interaction, linear, time decay and other models.

First interaction gives all credit to the first touchpoint, linear splits credit equally across the path, and time decay gives more credit to recent interactions. Its ads dashboard uses a last ad interaction model by default, and the ads metrics change with the model you select.

| Question you are asking | Attribution model to start with | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Which ad closed the visit that became a lead? | Last interaction | Rewards the final click before the conversion |
| Which campaigns start the journeys that later convert? | First interaction | Credits the first known touch |
| Which touchpoints deserve a share of the deal? | Linear or time decay | Spreads credit across the path |
| How should Google Ads bid? | Data-driven, if eligible | Uses your account's conversion path data |

The campaigns with the most conversions are not always the ones with the most revenue, so compare two models on the same deals before you move budget. Where they disagree, a campaign is either opening journeys or closing them. Google Ads has a model comparison report for this job.

Google Analytics has its own [attribution settings](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/10596866?hl=en), and its data-driven model uses machine learning algorithms to evaluate both converting and non-converting paths. Expect its numbers to differ from HubSpot's. Our guide to [revenue attribution](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/revenue-attribution) explains how to credit the work that closed a deal.

## The metrics that connect ad spend to revenue, with formulas

Use a small set of metrics and calculate them from closed-won deals, not from leads. They help you determine which spend earns its place and give insights into campaign performance that platform reports cannot.

The arithmetic below uses one invented month and is illustrative, not a benchmark: $6,000 of ad spend, 120 leads, 4 closed-won deals and $30,000 of deal revenue.

### Cost per deal

HubSpot defines cost per deal as the amount spent on the ad divided by the number of closed-won deals associated with attributed contacts.

Formula: cost per deal = ad spend / closed-won deals

Illustrative arithmetic: $6,000 / 4 = $1,500.

### Return on ad spend

Return on ad spend, or ROAS, is the revenue each dollar of ad spend produced, and attribution shows which campaigns earn it.

Formula: ROAS = attributed deal revenue / ad spend

Illustrative arithmetic: $30,000 / $6,000 = 5, or $5 of revenue for every $1 spent.

### Return on investment

HubSpot's [campaign ROI formula](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/campaigns/analyze-your-campaign-roi) takes revenue minus spend, divides by spend and multiplies by 100.

Formula: ROI = (revenue - ad spend) / ad spend x 100

Illustrative arithmetic: ($30,000 - $6,000) / $6,000 x 100 = 400%.

### Break-even ROAS

A ROAS target means little without your margin. Break-even ROAS is the ROAS at which gross profit equals ad spend.

Formula: break-even ROAS = 1 / gross margin

Illustrative arithmetic: at a 25% gross margin, 1 / 0.25 = 4. A ROAS of 4 only recovers the ad spend on the first sale at that margin.

### Blank-source share

This data quality metric shows how much of your revenue the system cannot trace.

Formula: blank-source share = closed-won deals with no campaign data / all closed-won deals x 100

Illustrative arithmetic: 5 of 20 closed-won deals with no campaign data gives 25%. If this number is high, fix the tracking chain before you compare campaigns.

HubSpot's [ads analysis page](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/ads/analyze-ad-campaigns-in-hubspot) adds a caution. Its revenue from deals can differ from the closed revenue by source report because the two use different attribution models.

## Know the limits before you trust a PPC attribution report

![Three stage cards, click made, contact tracked and deal closed, with the six limits of a PPC attribution report listed under the stage where each happens.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/Paid%20Acquisition/Optimization/PPC%20Attribution%20-%20How%20to%20Trace%20Ad%20Spend%20to%20Revenue%20in%20HubSpot/lp13-ppc-attribution-leaks-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=lp13-ppc-attribution-leaks-blog-1600x900.png)

Every attribution system has blind spots, including visitors who block tracking. Name them so nobody mistakes a gap for a result.

- **Contacts are not conversions.** HubSpot's page says network conversions count actions, while HubSpot counts tracked visitors, so one person who submits a form ten times is one contact. Do not expect the two counts to match.
- **Ad type changes what you see.** HubSpot's [track and report page](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/ads/track-and-report-on-google-ads-in-hubspot) says Performance Max campaigns are reporting-only. HubSpot's [ads FAQ](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/ads/ads-faq) explains that reporting shows network data, while tracking is what attributes contacts.
- **No retroactive attribution.** Clicks before auto-tracking was enabled stay unattributed, and redirects that strip tags break the trail.
- **Offline steps stay invisible.** Calls and meetings count only when they are associated with a contact and a qualifying deal.

## A weekly, monthly and quarterly routine keeps PPC attribution honest

![One route through six steps in three stages: weekly, test one live ad and compare spend; monthly, compare cost per deal and check blank sources; quarterly, audit the chain and reconcile with finance.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/Paid%20Acquisition/Optimization/PPC%20Attribution%20-%20How%20to%20Trace%20Ad%20Spend%20to%20Revenue%20in%20HubSpot/lp13-ppc-attribution-cadence-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=lp13-ppc-attribution-cadence-blog-1600x900.png)

Small reviews on a fixed schedule beat a big cleanup after a bad quarter.

### Weekly

Monitor the chain: click one live ad, submit the form and confirm the contact carries the campaign. Review ad spend by campaign in the HubSpot ads dashboard against the Google Ads account, and look for sudden drops in attributed contacts.

### Monthly

Compare cost per deal and ROAS by campaign for deals that closed in the month, and read them next to cost per lead. Check the blank-source share, and ask sales to confirm that every closed-won deal has an amount, a close date and an associated contact.

Look at your top campaigns under two attribution models, and shift budget toward those that look strong under both.

### Quarterly

Audit the complete chain and your wider marketing strategy. Review UTM naming, ad types that cannot be tracked, lifecycle stage definitions, and the conversion events synced to Google Ads. Compare the quarter's attributed revenue with finance's view of revenue from paid channels, and explain the difference.

Revisit your attribution model and break-even ROAS, check them against your business goals and campaign goals, then report in revenue terms. Our guide to [PPC advertising strategies](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/the-ultimate-guide-to-ppc-advertising-strategies) covers the campaign decisions this reporting should inform.

## Common PPC attribution mistakes break the trail between spend and revenue

Most failures come from a few repeated mistakes.

- **Judging campaigns on leads.** A cheap lead that never closes is the most expensive result you can buy.
- **Switching on tracking after launch.** The first clicks are lost for good.
- **Using a custom Customer stage without a plan.** Deals drop out of the ads report.
- **Leaving deals half-filled.** A missing amount, close date or contact keeps revenue out of attribution.
- **Treating one model as truth.** Each model answers one question, and the real answer sits in the comparison.
- **Expecting HubSpot and Google Ads to match.** They count different things.

## What you gain when this is done properly

When ad spend traces to revenue, the argument about whether PPC works becomes a review of numbers. Every team that touches the pipeline benefits.

### Sales sees which ads bring buyers

Sales learns which campaigns produce customers, so follow-up time goes where deals actually start. Reps can open a contact and see the ad and keyword that brought them in, plus the value of the deal that followed.

### Marketing moves budget on evidence

Accurate budget allocation depends on knowing which campaigns drive conversions that become customers. Marketing can cut campaigns that generate leads without deals and fund the ones that produce them. You also report to leadership in revenue terms, which protects the ad spend that works when budgets tighten.

### Customer success understands who bought and why

Customer success sees which campaigns bring customers who stay and expand, not just customers who sign. Onboarding teams also learn what the customer was promised in the ad.

## Make ad spend part of your go-to-market system

PPC attribution is a chain of small decisions about tags, forms, deals and definitions, followed by a review habit. Once the chain holds, every campaign can answer the question leadership keeps asking: what did this return?

Propello designs and builds connected go-to-market systems on HubSpot for CEOs and revenue leaders at growing B2B companies, using revenue operations to join marketing, sales and customer success data. If you want help tracing your ad spend to revenue, an audit is the place to start.

## Frequently asked questions

Can you connect Google Ads to HubSpot?

Yes. In HubSpot, choose Settings, Marketing, Ads, and connect your Google Ads account. You need Publish access to the ads tool and Admin access to the individual Google Ads account. HubSpot connects individual accounts, not manager accounts, and ad blockers should be switched off while you connect.

 What is attribution for ads?

Attribution for ads is the method that assigns credit for a lead, deal or sale to the ads that influenced it. An attribution model sets the rule, such as giving all credit to the last click or sharing it across touchpoints. Different models can credit the same deal to different campaigns.

Is a ROAS of 4 good?

It depends on your gross margin and sales cycle. Break-even ROAS is 1 divided by gross margin, so at a 25% margin a ROAS of 4 only recovers the ad spend. Compare your ROAS with your own break-even figure and with payback time, not with a general rule.

Why do HubSpot and Google Ads show different numbers?

They count different things. Google Ads counts conversion actions, and one visitor can create several. HubSpot counts tracked contacts and credits them with its own attribution model. Time zones, ad types that cannot be tracked and ad blockers add further gaps, so reconcile by definition, not by headline total.

 Is PPC just Google Ads?

No. Pay per click also runs on other search engines and on social media platforms, where advertisers bid for placement and pay when someone clicks. Google Ads is the best-known example. The attribution method is the same on every platform: tag the click, capture the contact, and match it to a deal.

An attribution model sets the rule, such as giving all credit to the last click or sharing it across touchpoints. Different models can credit the same deal to different campaigns."
