If you lead marketing or growth at a B2B company, link building is the work of getting other websites to link to yours, so that search engines and buyers find you in search engine results pages and trust what they find. This guide shows how to earn those links in six steps, using white hat link building methods only.

It is for marketing leads, founders and SEO owners who want a link building strategy they can run without an agency or a shortcut. You get a finish line for every step, the checks to make first and the mistakes that put a site at risk.

| **Link Building** The practice of earning links from other websites to your own, so that search engines and people can find and trust your pages. |
| --- |

## By the end you will have a link building campaign you can run every quarter

A good plan is small enough to start this month and specific enough to hand to someone else.

- One asset worth citing, with a clear reason why another site would link to it.
- A list of the site owners and publications that already link to content like yours.
- An outreach message that offers the other person something, plus a tracked list of who you contacted.
- A digital PR routine and a short list of partners and customers who can link to you.
- A review habit that tells you which link building efforts to repeat and which to drop.

## What to have in place before you start

![Five stacked layers from the bottom: a site worth linking to, a named owner, a baseline, a target audience and a shortcut rule, held together by earned links.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/SEO/Consideration/Link%20Building%20-%20How%20to%20Earn%20Links%20for%20a%20B2B%20Website%20in%20Six%20Steps/sk05-link-building-readiness-layers-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=sk05-link-building-readiness-layers-blog-1600x900.png)

Links point to pages. If the pages are weak, earned links are wasted, so close these gaps first.

- **A site worth linking to.** The pages you want linked should answer a question well and load properly. If you have no content plan yet, read [how to build an SEO strategy](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/how-to-build-an-seo-strategy) first.
- **An owner and a weekly slot.** Link building is steady work. Name one person and give them time.
- **A baseline.** Open Google Search Console and note who links to you today. Google's own help page says the links report [is not a comprehensive list and shows a sample of links](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/9049606), so treat it as a starting picture.
- **A clear target audience.** Know which buyers you want to reach, because links from relevant websites matter more than links from any website.
- **A rule on shortcuts.** Agree now that you will not buy links, trade them in bulk or use link farms. The mistakes section explains why.

### Why links still matter for search engines

Links are one way search engines find pages and judge them, and they feed into search engine rankings and search engine results. Google states that it [uses links as a signal when determining the relevancy of pages and to find new pages to crawl](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/links-crawlable). If you are new to how search works, start with [what SEO is and how it works](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/what-is-seo-and-how-does-it-work).

### What a quality link looks like

A link from another site works like a vote of confidence in your page, but not every link helps. High quality links and high quality backlinks come from authoritative websites that are relevant to your topic, sit in the body of an article and were given because the page deserved it. These are editorial links, often called contextual links, and they are the ones to aim for. Link quality depends on relevance, trust and context far more than on volume.

Non editorial links are different. Self created links, such as blog comments or profiles you add yourself, rarely carry weight, and multiple links from one site add little. Tool scores such as a site's domain authority can help you sort a list, but they are estimates, so read the page before you pitch it. Inbound links is simply another name for backlinks: the links other sites point at yours.

A second meaning is worth a line: some people say link building when they mean adding internal links between their own pages. That is useful, but this guide covers external links earned from other sites.

## Link building in six steps

![One route through six steps in three groups: prepare, reach out and learn.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/SEO/Consideration/Link%20Building%20-%20How%20to%20Earn%20Links%20for%20a%20B2B%20Website%20in%20Six%20Steps/sk05-link-building-six-steps-path-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=sk05-link-building-six-steps-path-blog-1600x900.png)

Work through these link building techniques in order, because each step feeds the next. Each ends with what done looks like. The aim is to build links people give you, not links you place yourself.

### 1. Create something worth citing

People link to pages that help them make a point. Before you contact anyone, build a linkable asset: a page another writer would want to reference.

Good assets for a B2B company include:

- Original research or a survey of your own customers or market.
- A clear explainer or guide that is better than the pages that rank today.
- A free interactive tool, calculator or template.
- A glossary or reference page that defines the terms in your field.

Another route is the skyscraper technique: take an existing page and make it clearly better than the pages that rank today, then show it to the sites that link to the weaker versions. Creating valuable content is the foundation of every link building technique below. Pick the asset that only your team can make, because your own data and experience cannot be copied by a competitor.

Write for the person who will cite you. Put the key finding near the top, label charts clearly and say who made it and when, so a journalist or blogger can quote you correctly.

You are done when one asset is published, has a clear reason for another site to cite it, and is a page you would be proud to see quoted.

### 2. Find who already links to content like yours

Your best prospects are the sites that already link to similar pages. They have shown they cite this kind of resource.

Start with the pages that rank for your topic. List the websites that link to them, using the link building tools your team already uses, such as a backlink checker. Then sort the list by relevance: news sites, trade publications, resource pages and industry blogs your buyers read.

Use Google search operators to find resource pages, for example a phrase such as your topic with "useful resources". Look for broken links on those pages too. Broken link building means telling a site owner that a link on their page is dead and offering your page as a replacement, which helps them as much as it helps you.

Find websites that fit your buyers, and check each relevant article before you pitch it. Keep the list short and real. Twenty relevant sites beat two hundred random ones.

You are done when you have a tracked list of relevant websites, each with a named contact, a reason it would link to you and the page you would suggest.

### 3. Send outreach that gives something

Outreach is a request to a busy person, so it must be easy to say yes to. A good message is short, personal and about their site, not yours.

- Say why you are writing and what you noticed on their page.
- Offer the specific thing: a stronger source, a fix for a broken link, a quote from your own data or an expert comment.
- Make the ask small. One link, one page.
- Follow up once, politely, and then stop.

Never send the same message to hundreds of people. Site owners spot templates, and Google's spam policies list automated link creation as link spam, as the mistakes section explains.

Guest posts can work when you write something useful for the other site's readers and the link is natural. Do not write posts only to place a link with optimized anchor text.

You are done when every prospect on your list has had a personal first message, replies are logged and each follow-up is recorded.

### 4. Earn coverage through digital PR

Digital PR is link building through news and stories, and it is how many brands attract links from news sites. Instead of asking for a link, you give journalists and editors something worth reporting, and the link follows when they cite you.

Use the asset from the first step. Turn its main finding into a short pitch and send it to the reporters who cover your subject. Offer an expert from your team who can comment on a trend with real experience behind it. Respond quickly when a writer asks for a source, because timing decides who gets quoted.

Keep your claims accurate and sourced. A reporter who cannot trust your figures will not come back.

Brand mentions help here too, and you can track them with Google Alerts. Link monitoring of this kind shows you where to ask for a link. A mention without a link still builds awareness, and some can be turned into links with a polite request. The difference is explained in [brand mentions vs backlinks](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/brand-mentions-vs-backlinks).

You are done when you have a pitch ready for each story, a list of reporters who cover your topic and a log of every mention, linked or not.

### 5. Use partners, customers and your own network

Some of the most natural links come from business connections, the people who already know you. Partners, customers, suppliers, event organizers and industry groups are all website owners, and many are glad to link to a company they work with.

- Ask partners whether a case page, directory or integration page could name you.
- Ask customers who are happy to be referenced for permission to be listed. Offer to write testimonials for suppliers you use, and ask whether a link can go with them.
- Provide speakers, quotes or data for events and industry bodies.
- Join niche directories run by people in your field, the kind that direct users and sites seeking good sources actually consult.

Do not trade links in bulk. Google's spam policy lists excessive link exchanges as link spam. A link between two businesses that truly work together is natural. A page of reciprocal links is not.

You are done when you have asked every partner and customer who could reasonably link to you, and each answer is recorded.

### 6. Review, learn and repeat

Look at the work every month and decide what to repeat. Good link monitoring tells you what your link building efforts earned. For each link or mention, record the site, the page it points to, the step that earned it and whether it brought referral visits, direct traffic or other website traffic.

Check Google Search Console for new linking sites, and watch search rankings and organic traffic for the pages you promoted. Watch for links that disappear, and for any strange links you did not earn.

Ask three questions each time: which asset earned the most links, which outreach message got replies and which sites are worth building a relationship with. Drop what does not work and do more of what does.

Link equity and link authority build slowly, so judge the work over quarters, not weeks. Search results can also change for reasons unrelated to your links, so avoid claiming that a single link caused a change.

You are done when you have a monthly review on the calendar, a record of every earned link and a short list of what to do next.

## Link building mistakes to avoid

Most problems come from shortcuts. White hat link building follows search engine guidelines and creates value for users. Black hat methods break those guidelines, and search engines can penalize them. Google's spam policies define link spam as [creating links to or from a site primarily for the purpose of manipulating search rankings](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/essentials/spam-policies), and the list of examples is worth reading in full.

- **Buying links to improve rankings.** Google lists buying or selling links for ranking purposes as link spam. Paid placements are acceptable only when marked with the right link attribute.
- **Using link farms or private blog networks.** These exist to manufacture links. Avoid them, along with other black hat link building.
- **Automating outreach or link creation.** Using automated programs to create links is also on Google's list.
- **Optimizing anchor text in guest posts.** Keyword-stuffed anchors in distributed articles are flagged. Use descriptive, natural anchor text.
- **Chasing quantity.** Many low quality links, and long runs of link acquisition by shortcut, add risk and little value. A few links from relevant, trusted sites are worth more.
- **Ignoring your own pages.** Links to a thin page waste the effort. Fix the page first.
- **Forgetting to qualify paid links.** Google asks sites to mark [paid placements with the sponsored value](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/qualify-outbound-links).
- **Treating link building as a one-off.** Quality links come from steady habits, not a single burst.

If you hire SEO agencies or link building services, ask exactly how each link is earned. Any answer that involves buying, swapping at scale or networks of sites is a warning sign.

## What you gain when this is done properly

![A hub for earned links with six spokes: two gains each for sales, marketing and customer success.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/SEO/Consideration/Link%20Building%20-%20How%20to%20Earn%20Links%20for%20a%20B2B%20Website%20in%20Six%20Steps/sk05-link-building-team-gains-spoke-hub-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=sk05-link-building-team-gains-spoke-hub-blog-1600x900.png)

Earned links compound, and they support long term SEO success. Each good asset keeps attracting citations, and each relationship makes the next request easier. Each team benefits differently.

### Sales meets buyers who already trust you

Buyers who see your website's visibility grow in search results, or who find you through a respected publication or partner arrive with some trust already in place. Sellers spend less time proving credibility and more time on the buyer's problem.

### Marketing gets a process to build links and visibility

Marketing gets stronger SEO performance signals, a measurable list of linking sites, a library of linkable assets and a repeatable process. Content spend goes to the assets that earn citations, which supports organic traffic over time.

### Customer success gets proof to point to

Coverage and partner links give customer success third-party material to share with new customers. They also surface the stories and customers worth featuring next.

## Earn links the way your buyers would notice

Link building works when it is treated as the earned part of a wider search engine optimization plan, one that builds your website's authority with buyers and other search engines: a useful asset, relevant people, a generous message and a steady review. Skip the shortcuts and the foundations stay safe.

## Frequently asked questions

What is link building in SEO?

Link building is the practice of earning links from other websites to your own. Search engines use links to find pages and judge their relevance, so relevant links from trusted sites support visibility. White hat methods earn links with useful content and honest outreach.

Is link building still relevant to SEO?

Yes. Google states that it uses links as a signal of relevance and to discover pages. Links are not the only factor, so pair them with strong content and a sound site. Earn them through quality, not through manipulation that breaks spam policies.

How do I get backlinks to my website?

Publish something worth citing, find the sites that link to similar pages, send personal outreach that offers value, pitch stories through digital PR and ask partners and customers. Then review what worked. Skip buying links, link farms and automated link creation.

How do I check my backlinks?

Open the links report in Google Search Console to see a sample of sites linking to you, then compare it with the backlink tool your team uses. The report is a sample, so use it to spot patterns and new linking sites, not as a full count.

Are guest posts and paid links allowed?

Guest posts are fine when they genuinely help the host site's readers and the link is natural. Google lists optimized anchor text in distributed guest posts as link spam. Paid links are acceptable only when qualified with the sponsored or nofollow attribute.
