Your content is good, yet search engines and AI tools still seem unsure who your company is. This is for the CEO, founder or revenue leader in that position. The short answer: knowledge graph SEO makes your company a clearly defined entity, because an engine must know what you are before it names you.

You will get a plain explanation of entities, what Google says about its Knowledge Graph and knowledge panels, and the work that builds entity authority, written as tasks you can commission. Nothing here promises a knowledge panel or a mention. It covers what you can control.

| **Knowledge Graph** A Knowledge Graph is a database of entities, such as people, organizations and products, and the relationships between them, which an engine uses to understand what a question is about. |
| --- |

## What is entity SEO, and why does it matter now?

An entity is a defined concept: a company, a person, a product, a place, an event or a category. Each has attributes, such as a name and a description, and entity relationships to other things, such as the founder who leads it or the category it belongs to.

Search engines now read the web through those connections, not only through words. Google's own example is a query like Taj Mahal, which could mean a monument, a musician or a restaurant. The engine has to work out which one the person means. Context decides, and entities supply it.

Entity SEO is the practice of making your company a distinct entity, so a search engine can tell which company, person or product a page is about. It also shows the engine the relevant entities around you, such as your category, your leaders and your products.

Traditional SEO asks whether a page matches a query. Entity SEO asks whether the engine knows who is speaking, and whether what it knows is correct. It links traditional search to AI-written answers, because the same clear facts serve both.

## How Google's Knowledge Graph and knowledge panels work

![The three parts of a knowledge graph. Nodes: The entities themselves. For your company: Your company; Your products; Your people. Edges: The relationships between entities. For your company: People work for the company; Products belong to a category; Guides discuss products. Attributes: The facts about each node. For your company: What you do; Where you are based; When you were founded.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/AEO/Consideration/Knowledge%20Graph%20SEO%20-%20How%20Entity%20Authority%20Gets%20Your%20Brand%20Into%20AI%20Answers/knowledge-graph-seo-entity-authority-graph-nodes-edges-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=knowledge-graph-seo-entity-authority-graph-nodes-edges-blog-1600x900.png)

Google introduced its Knowledge Graph in May 2012 with the phrase "things, not strings". Its [launch post](https://blog.google/products/search/introducing-knowledge-graph-things-not/) said the graph understands real-world entities and their relationships, and that it then held more than 500 million objects and more than 3.5 billion facts about and relationships between them.

A graph is made of three parts. Nodes are the entities. Edges are the relationships between them. Attributes are the facts about each node. When a question mentions an entity, the engine follows the edges to related things instead of matching keywords.

Each entity also needs an identity of its own. Google's [Knowledge Graph Search API documentation](https://developers.google.com/knowledge-graph) shows entries with an identifier, a name, a type and a description, and says the graph has millions of entries describing people, places and things.

Google's launch post named public sources such as Freebase, Wikipedia and the CIA World Factbook, and said the graph is augmented well beyond them. Google's Knowledge Graph is therefore built from what the wider web says, which is why consistency outside your own site matters.

### What a Google knowledge panel is, and what Google says about getting one

A Google knowledge panel is the information box shown on the search engine results page, with the ordinary search results, when someone searches for an entity in Google's Knowledge Graph. The graph is the database. The panel is one place it shows.

Google's [knowledge panel help page](https://support.google.com/knowledgepanel/answer/9163198) says panels are generated automatically from sources across the web, and that some information can come from verified entities who suggested edits.

Google also states that its [current policy](https://support.google.com/knowledgepanel/answer/7534842) is not to manually create or delete knowledge panels. So no form requests one, and nobody can honestly sell you one. A panel appears when Google's systems judge they hold enough reliable information about you.

### How to find out whether your company already has a knowledge panel

Search for your exact company name on Google and look through the search results for an information box about the company. Then search for each leader by name. Some entities have a knowledge panel and some do not, and a missing one is not a fault you can fix by request.

## Why entity clarity matters more when the engine writes the answer

A list of search results lets the reader decide. An AI answer decides for the reader. To name your company in an answer about your category, the engine must first work out what your company is, what it does and whether it is the same company described elsewhere.

That is true whether the answer appears in Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Microsoft Copilot. Each writes sentences about companies, and a sentence needs a subject that is clearly identified. How engines then choose which sources to cite is explained in [AI search ranking factors](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/ai-search-ranking-factors). In AI search, a vague entity is easy to leave out.

Google is plain about one point. Its [guidance on AI features](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that no special schema.org markup is needed. So entity work is not a switch you flip. It is groundwork.

This is part of what Propello calls AI Engine Optimization (AEO), which the wider market also calls answer engine optimization. Our [guide to AEO](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/ultimate-guide-ai-engine-optimization) covers the whole discipline. Entity clarity is the part that decides whether the rest has anything to attach to.

### Is Google's Knowledge Graph still relevant when AI writes the answer?

Google has not published how its AI features use the Knowledge Graph, so treat it as the clearest public example of how an engine stores facts about a specific entity, not as a described dependency. The principle holds across AI tools: an answer needs subjects the system can identify and facts it can check.

## How to build entity authority your engines can verify

![One name, category and description at the centre, repeated across six places. Your website: Plain facts on your About page. Google Business Profile: Claimed and verified. Professional networks: Linked back to your site. Review sites: The same category and description. Industry directories: The same name, everywhere. Partner and event pages: Listings that state it the same way.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/AEO/Consideration/Knowledge%20Graph%20SEO%20-%20How%20Entity%20Authority%20Gets%20Your%20Brand%20Into%20AI%20Answers/knowledge-graph-seo-entity-authority-consistency-map-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=knowledge-graph-seo-entity-authority-consistency-map-blog-1600x900.png)

Entity authority is how confidently an engine can say who you are, what you do and how you relate to other entities, such as your category, your people and your locations. It is built from consistent facts repeated across sources the engine can check. Entity SEO work comes down to the tasks below.

### Map your digital footprint, then choose one name, category and description

Start by listing every place your company appears, from your site and records to directories, event pages and partner listings. That is your digital footprint. Note every place the name, category or description differs.

Then write down your legal name, trading name, product names, the category you want to be placed in and a short description. Use exactly those everywhere. Pick a category people actually search for, so engines and buyers do not place you with the wrong peers.

### State the facts plainly on your About page

Your About page and organization details should say who you are, what you do, where you are based, when you were founded, who leads the company and which markets you serve. Plain sentences give an engine an easier time understanding you, because it cannot extract a fact from a slogan.

### Help Google recognize the entity with structured data

Structured data is a standard way of describing what a page is about in a form machines read directly. Keeping that markup accurate as the business changes is covered in [organization schema markup maintenance](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/organization-schema-markup-maintenance). Google's [Organization documentation](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/organization) says organization markup on your home page helps Google understand your administrative details and disambiguate your organization from others.

Three types of schema markup matter most. Organization describes the company, and the schema.org [Organization](https://schema.org/Organization) page defines sameAs as the URL of a reference page that unambiguously indicates the item's identity. It works like a unique identifier you can point to on your other official profiles.

Person describes the people who speak for the company, with properties such as job title and the organization they work for. Product describes what you sell, with its brand and category. The [Person](https://schema.org/Person) and [Product](https://schema.org/Product) pages list the properties.

Keep the markup honest. Google's [structured data guidelines](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/intro-structured-data) say not to mark up information that is not visible to the user, and that fewer complete, accurate properties beat many sloppy ones. Google also does not guarantee that any feature will appear.

### Keep your Google Business Profile and other company profiles consistent

Platforms that describe companies, such as professional networks, review sites and industry directories, are sources too. Give each the same name, category and description as your website, plus the relevant information about where you operate, and link back to your site.

Local businesses, and any company with a location or service area, should claim a Google Business Profile. Google's [Business Profile help](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3039617) says you must claim and verify it to show your business on Search and Maps, and that verified owners manage details such as name, categories and website.

### Earn independent mentions that repeat the same facts

A source you control cannot corroborate you alone. Trade press, industry associations, event pages and partner pages that state your name, category and facts the same way give an engine something independent to compare against.

A Wikipedia page is one such source, and Google named Wikipedia among the sources behind its graph. Independent editors decide whether a company qualifies, so treat a Wikipedia page as a result of real coverage, not as a task to submit.

### Name the people with real expertise on the work

Put real names on guides, research and product pages, and give each person a profile page that states their role and subject. A strong personal brand for your experts also gives engines a second entity linked to your company.

Markup cannot create expertise. The schema.org definition of knowsAbout says it suggests possible expertise without implying it, so the expertise has to be visible on the page and consistent across the places those people appear.

### Use internal linking to show how your pages relate

Your own site holds relationships too. Link product pages to the category they belong to, people to the company, and guides to the products they discuss. That mirrors, on your site, the relationships you want an engine to learn.

## How to claim or correct a Google knowledge panel

![The decision: does a knowledge panel already exist for your company? If yes, claim it and suggest changes: verify your identity, flag the fact and describe the change, and link pages that verify it. If no, you cannot request one: Google builds panels from sources across the web, and consistent facts everywhere change what Google holds.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/AEO/Consideration/Knowledge%20Graph%20SEO%20-%20How%20Entity%20Authority%20Gets%20Your%20Brand%20Into%20AI%20Answers/knowledge-graph-seo-entity-authority-panel-sources-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=knowledge-graph-seo-entity-authority-panel-sources-blog-1600x900.png)

This applies only if a panel already exists for your company or a person in it. You cannot make one appear. Google's [help page](https://support.google.com/knowledgepanel/answer/9163198) says that if you are the subject or an official representative of the entity, you can claim the panel and suggest changes.

Verified feedback requires verifying your identity, and Google says that once you do, it can make some corrections directly, such as links to social profiles. To suggest a change to a fact, Google's [update guide](https://support.google.com/knowledgepanel/answer/7534902) says to flag it, describe the change and link to pages that verify it.

Two limits matter. Google says descriptions come from various data sources and cannot be edited. Google's help pages also make no promise that a suggestion will be accepted.

Because a Google knowledge panel draws on sources across the web, the lasting fix is to correct those sources. Claiming the panel changes what it shows today. Consistent facts everywhere change what it shows next.

## Common mistakes that keep an entity weak

- **Several names for the same product.** The site says one thing, the deck another and a directory a third, so engines may treat them as separate things.
- **A category you invented.** If nobody outside your company searches for the label, engines have no established category to place you in. Name it in plain words first.
- **Stale facts.** Old founding dates, former leaders and previous office locations stay on profiles and listings long after the website is fixed.
- **Schema markup that contradicts the page.** Markup that gives a different name, URL or role from the visible page undermines both. Update them together.
- **Markup for things nobody can see.** Google says not to mark up information that is not visible to the user. Declare only what the page shows.

## What you gain when this is done properly

Entity SEO will not control whether a knowledge panel appears. You do gain a company that is described the same way everywhere, which helps every team that has to explain who you are.

### Sales gets one description to point to

Reps can send prospects to pages that state the same facts a prospect meets in an AI answer or a directory. Fewer first calls begin with correcting what the buyer has already read, and your category claim stays consistent from the first touch.

### Marketing builds on one entity, not many

Every new campaign, guide and launch reinforces the same name, category and description instead of adding another version. Reporting is cleaner too, because pages, profiles and records in HubSpot all refer to the same company and the same products.

### Customer success carries the same story

Help content, onboarding guides and customer-facing documentation name the people who wrote them and the products they cover in the same words. Customers and prospective buyers see one coherent company, and your experts become visibly tied to the work.

## Start with one agreed set of facts about your company

Begin with a single page that holds your legal name, trading name, product names, category, short description, location, founding year and leaders. Get the business owner of each area to sign it off. Then check your website against it, then your profiles, then your markup. After that, the guide to [writing content for AI search](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/how-to-optimize-content-for-ai-search) shows how to apply those facts page by page.

## Frequently asked questions

 What is a knowledge panel?

A knowledge panel is an information box Google shows for an entity in its Knowledge Graph, such as a company, person or place. [Google says](https://support.google.com/knowledgepanel/answer/9163198) panels are generated automatically from sources across the web, and verified representatives can suggest changes. It is an output of Google's systems, not something you can order.

Do I need a Wikipedia page to get a knowledge panel?

Google's help pages do not say you need one. Wikipedia is one of the public sources Google named when it launched the graph, but independent editors decide whether a company qualifies. Build clear, consistent facts and independent coverage first, and treat any panel as an outcome you cannot promise.

Is structured data enough to get my brand into AI answers?

No. Structured data helps an engine disambiguate your organization, but Google says [no special markup is required](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Structured data works alongside plain facts on your pages, consistent profiles and independent sources that agree with it. It never guarantees a mention.

Who should own entity work inside the company?

A senior owner with authority across sales, marketing and customer success, usually in marketing leadership or revenue operations. They keep the fact sheet current, approve changes to names and categories, and make sure new pages, profiles and records follow it. Legal and product should confirm the facts.

Does entity SEO replace traditional SEO?

No. It sits underneath it. Traditional search still depends on pages that answer questions well, while entity work makes sure the engine knows who published them. A company with excellent content and a vague identity has the problem this article describes, and fixing the identity does not replace the content.
