Intent data is information about what people and companies do that suggests they are getting ready to buy, such as the pages they read and the topics they research. Used well, B2B intent data tells your marketing team who to talk to and what to say next, moving it from reacting to acting on evidence.

This article is for CEOs, founders, CROs and marketing leaders at B2B companies who hear "intent data" in every vendor pitch and want a plain answer. It explains the types, where the data comes from, and how it feeds the Tailor stage of HubSpot's [Loop Marketing](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/what-is-loop-marketing-guide) framework.

| **Intent Data** Intent data is behavioral information that shows which people or companies are researching, comparing or showing interest in a topic or product, so sales and marketing teams can judge buying intent before anyone raises a hand. |
| --- |

## How intent data turns research behavior into a signal

![Four stages from research behavior to a response: buyers research, a pattern appears across several people, the pattern becomes a signal worth acting on and the team acts on a response it agreed in advance.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/Loop%20Marketing/Consideration/Intent%20Data%20-%20How%20Buyer%20Signals%20Feed%20the%20Tailor%20Stage/intent-data-intent-signal-path-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=intent-data-intent-signal-path-blog-1600x900.png)

Most buyers do their reading before they ever speak to you. They visit websites, compare options and ask their peers, and none of it is visible in your CRM until a form is filled in. Intent data helps make part of that quiet research visible, much like market research that never stops.

A single action is a piece of raw data. A pattern of actions, read against what you know about the company, becomes a signal. One visit to a blog post tells you little. Three people from the same company reading your integration guide and then your pricing page tells you a great deal.

Someone has to decide what counts as a buying signal for your business, which accounts to watch, and what the team will do when a signal appears. Without those decisions, you collect noise. Raw data only becomes intent insights once someone has agreed what it means.

Intent data works at two levels. Some of it describes a person, such as a contact who downloaded a guide. Much of it describes the account level: a company whose people research the same topic.

HubSpot's own help pages note that buyer intent [stores company-level website activity](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/reports/use-buyer-intent) rather than naming the individual who visited. Website visitor behavior is matched to companies, which is why most of the picture sits at the account level.

### What a good signal has in common

Useful buyer intent signals share four traits. They are recent, so they describe what is happening now. They are specific, so they point to a topic or a page rather than a vague interest. They are tied to a key account. And they lead to an action your team can take.

A signal that fails any of these tests is noise.

## First-party, second-party and third-party intent data differ in who saw the behavior

![Three types of intent data compared by who saw the behavior: first-party from your own channels, second-party from a partner's first-party data and third-party collected across many sites.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/Loop%20Marketing/Consideration/Intent%20Data%20-%20How%20Buyer%20Signals%20Feed%20the%20Tailor%20Stage/intent-data-intent-data-three-sources-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=intent-data-intent-data-three-sources-blog-1600x900.png)

The most useful way to sort intent data is by who observed the behavior. Not all of it is created equal, because each type has a different level of accuracy, reach and privacy risk.

### First-party intent data comes from your own channels

First-party intent data is what you collect yourself, with the consent of the people involved. The main sources are website visits, form submissions, email engagement, product feature usage, event attendance and conversations with your sales team. Your contact database and website traffic reports are where most of it already lives.

Its strength is accuracy. You know exactly what happened and where, and first party signals such as repeat visits to a product page need no outside data sources.

Its limit is reach: you only see people who already found you. First-party data is also the base for everything else. Our article on [first-party data and a unified customer record](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/first-party-data-marketing-unified-customer-data) explains how to keep it in one place.

### Second-party intent data comes from a partner's first-party data

Second party intent data is another organization's first-party data, shared with you by agreement. A publisher or review community that sees what its audience reads might share topic-level activity through partner networks. You gain reach beyond your own site.

Because it comes from a named partner's first-party data, it is usually more reliable than anonymous third-party data. In return, you depend on the partner's collection and consent practices.

### Third-party intent data is collected away from your site

Third party intent data is gathered across many websites and sold or shared by intent data providers. It often comes from publisher networks, data co-ops, where members pool anonymous browsing activity into co-op data, and content consumption signals from thousands of external sources.

It shows companies researching topics you care about even if they have never visited you.

Its strength is reach into accounts that do not know you yet. Its limits are precision and transparency. Topic-level activity at the company level is a hint, not a confirmation, and you rarely see the individual behind it.

HubSpot's help pages describe both kinds inside its buyer intent tool. [Visitor intent](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/reports/configure-buyer-intent) covers companies that meet the page-visit rules you set on your own site. Research intent covers companies researching your chosen topics elsewhere, and is shown on a [four-level scale from Low to High](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/data-management/buyer-intent-intent-signals-and-custom-signals-frequently-asked-questions) based on how much that research has recently increased.

### Other signals that sit beside behavior

Some signals describe change inside a company rather than research behavior. HubSpot's page on intent signals lists examples such as [job changes, funding, executive hires, layoffs and product launches](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/reports/use-intent-signals) for companies you track.

Firmographic data, such as company size and industry, tells you whether an account fits, and technographic data shows which tools it already uses. Intent tells you whether it is moving.

## How intent data feeds the Tailor stage of Loop Marketing

![Tailor, the second of HubSpot's four Loop stages, at the centre with six supports around it: Express sets the audience, intent answers who should see this, what it should say and when it should arrive, segments and workflows act on signals and Evolve weighs which signals mattered.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/Loop%20Marketing/Consideration/Intent%20Data%20-%20How%20Buyer%20Signals%20Feed%20the%20Tailor%20Stage/intent-data-intent-tailor-stage-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=intent-data-intent-tailor-stage-blog-1600x900.png)

HubSpot describes [Loop Marketing](https://www.hubspot.com/loop-marketing) as a four-stage framework any marketing team can use to grow in the AI era. The stages are Express, Tailor, Amplify and Evolve. We describe it as HubSpot does, and Propello applies it as a HubSpot partner.

Express defines who you serve and what you stand for. Tailor is where that strategy meets a specific person. HubSpot says Tailor [uses enriched data and intent signals](https://www.hubspot.com/loop-marketing) to build target customer segments, and describes the aim as marketing that feels less like "Dear {First Name}" and more like "how did they know?"

Buyer intent data is the evidence behind that second reaction. It answers three questions the Tailor stage depends on.

- **Who should see this?** High intent accounts rise to the top of a list, so account-based marketing effort goes to the target accounts where interest is already forming.
- **What should it say?** The topic a company is researching decides which message, page or offer is relevant.
- **When should it arrive?** A signal that appeared this week supports a different message than one from last quarter.

### How intent data helps turn a signal into a tailored message

Say a mid-sized company in a target market visits your pricing page three times in a week, after its research activity on one topic rises.

Marketing can respond with content for that topic and that stage, not a generic newsletter, and can enrich the record with firmographic data so the message fits the size and industry of the company.

HubSpot's setup page uses the pricing page as its example of a [page path you can count as intent](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/reports/configure-buyer-intent). You choose the pages, the visit count and the time window.

Segments and workflows then put the signal to work. HubSpot's help pages explain that signal-based company properties can be used to [filter and build lists, trigger workflows and feed company scoring](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/reports/use-intent-signals). Data enrichment keeps those records complete. That is how a signal becomes a tailored email, a changed landing page or a task for sales.

The personal side of this depends on clean customer data. HubSpot's 2026 State of Marketing report found that [just 65% of marketers say they have high-quality audience data](https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/hubspot-blog-marketing-industry-trends-report), a share that did not change from the year before. Intent signals attached to a poor record produce poor tailoring.

In the same [report](https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/hubspot-blog-marketing-industry-trends-report), 93.2% of marketers said personalized or segmented experiences had led to more leads and purchases.

### How the loop learns from intent

In the Evolve stage, you look at which signals preceded real conversations and which produced nothing. Signals that predicted interest earn more weight, and signals that never led anywhere get dropped. The next pass through Tailor starts from better evidence.

Our [Loop Marketing playbook](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/loop-marketing-playbook-stages) walks through each stage in more detail.

## Which intent signals show buying intent most clearly

Not every signal deserves the same attention. Rank the types of intent by how close to a purchase decision they sit, and agree on that ranking before you automate anything.

- **Pricing page and comparison page visits.** Buyers read these late. Repeat visits from one company are among the strongest first-party signals.
- **Content consumption on a topic.** Reading several pieces on one subject suggests an active project. One piece suggests curiosity.
- **Research behavior across other sites.** Rising activity on topics tied to your product suggests an account is entering a buying cycle.
- **Job changes, job postings and leadership hires.** A new decision maker often reviews the tools their predecessor chose, and job postings show where a company is investing.
- **Funding and growth news.** New money usually brings new priorities.

Treat these as inputs to a judgment, not verdicts.

## How intent data differs from lead scoring and behavioral segmentation

Intent data is often confused with two neighboring ideas.

Lead scoring is a method for ranking contacts or companies by fit and engagement. Intent data is one input to that score. A scoring model with no intent in it ranks accounts by who they are. Adding intent makes it rank them by who they are and what they are doing now.

Behavioral segmentation is the practice of grouping buyers by what they do. Intent data supplies the behavior, and segmentation turns it into groups you can send different messages. Our guide to [behavioral segmentation](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/behavioral-segmentation) shows how to build those groups from your own data.

Acting on a signal once it appears is a sales question, and our article on [turning intent signals into sales action](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/intent-signals-to-sales-action) covers it. This article stays on what the data is and how marketing uses it.

## How to judge the best intent data providers for your business

Intent data providers sell reach into accounts you cannot see yourself. Whether you are comparing intent data tools or a full sales intelligence platform, test the claims before you pay. Compare key features, then ask each of the intent vendors on your shortlist these questions, and treat vague answers as answers.

- **Where does the data come from?** You want to know the intent data sources, whether the activity is consented, and how recent it is.
- **At what level is it reported?** Account-level data tells you which company is active. It rarely tells you who.
- **How does it handle privacy?** Ask how consent is collected and how the data meets rules such as GDPR and CCPA in the markets you sell into.
- **How does it connect to your CRM?** A signal that cannot reach your marketing automation platform and your records does not reach your team.
- **How will you test it?** Run it against a defined set of target accounts and compare lead-to-opportunity conversion with accounts you did not target.
- **Will your team use it?** Ease of use and room to customize the data to your needs decide adoption, and one tool that covers several needs can replace a stack of overlapping ones.

IP-based identification has real limits, too. HubSpot's help pages explain that buyer intent connects visits to companies through [IP addresses](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/data-management/buyer-intent-intent-signals-and-custom-signals-frequently-asked-questions), which identifies the company behind a visit and not the person.

## What you gain when this is done properly

When intent data sits in your customer record and drives decisions, sales and marketing efforts line up around a unified view of account interest.

### Sales gets a shorter list of better-timed accounts

Instead of working a long list in order, sales sees which target accounts are active and why. That makes the first conversation about the problem the account is already researching, and it ends the time lost chasing low-intent accounts.

### Marketing aims campaigns at accounts that are paying attention

Marketing teams can run targeted campaigns for accounts showing interest, and hold back spend on marketing campaigns aimed at accounts that are not. Campaign performance is easier to judge because you can compare signaled accounts with the rest.

### Customer success sees expansion and risk earlier

The same signals apply to existing customers. A customer whose people research a neighboring product may signal cross-sell opportunities. Tracking existing customers this way also surfaces churn risk: a champion who leaves is worth knowing about early. Customer success can act on both with a personal note instead of a generic campaign.

## Start with one signal and one audience

Do not buy a platform first. Start with the first-party signals your sales and marketing teams already collect, such as pricing page visits and repeat content reading. Pick one audience of target accounts, decide what a strong signal looks like, and agree what marketing will do within a day of seeing it.

Run that for a cycle, then use Evolve to check which signals preceded real conversations.

Add third-party data only when the first-party picture shows a clear gap, such as too few accounts in view. Combining the two improves accuracy, because each checks the other.

Propello designs and builds connected go-to-market systems on HubSpot, and is a HubSpot partner (see [about Propello](https://www.finemediabw.com/about-us)). If you want to know which intent signals your current data can already support, an audit is the place to start.

## Frequently asked questions

What is intent data in simple terms?

Intent data is information about what people and companies do online that suggests they may buy: pages they read, topics they research and changes inside their business. Teams use it to decide which accounts to contact, what to say and when, instead of waiting for someone to fill in a form.

What are the types of intent data?

The main types are first-party, second-party and third-party. First-party comes from your own website, email and product. Second-party is a partner's first-party data shared with you. Third-party is collected across many sites by data providers. Each differs in accuracy, reach and privacy risk.

What is an example of an intent signal?

A common example is several people from one company visiting your pricing page in the same week. Other examples include rising research on a topic you sell into, a new executive hire or a funding announcement. A signal means more when the company also fits your target market.

Is intent data the same as lead scoring?

No. Lead scoring ranks contacts or companies by fit and engagement, while intent data is the behavior that feeds part of that ranking. A score without intent tells you who an account is. Adding intent shows what the account is doing now, which helps timing.

How does intent data support Loop Marketing?

Intent data supports the Tailor stage, where HubSpot says enriched data and intent signals shape target segments and personal messages. It tells you which accounts to prioritize and which topic to address. Evolve then shows which signals predicted real interest, so the next pass improves.
