If you lead revenue or marketing at a B2B company, you have probably heard three names for the same shift: Search Generative Experience, AI Overviews and AI Mode.

The short answer is that Google ran a generative AI experiment in 2023, made it a standard part of Google Search in 2024, and added a conversational mode in 2025. For B2B teams, that means buyers now research inside an AI generated summary before they ever see a list of links.

This article is for CEOs, founders, CROs and marketing leaders who need to know what changed, when, and what to do about it this quarter. In the sections below you will learn the dated timeline from Google's own announcements, how AI Mode differs from AI Overviews, and the first steps for your team.

| **AI Mode** AI Mode is Google's conversational search experience, where Gemini breaks a question into related searches and returns one written answer with links, then takes follow-up questions. |

## What changed from the Search Generative Experience to AI Mode

![One route through five steps in three phases: SGE appears as a Labs preview first, AI Overviews roll out and spread next, and AI Mode is tested and then opened to everyone in the U.S. now.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/AEO/Awareness/From%20SGE%20to%20AI%20Mode%20-%20How%20Google%20AI%20Search%20Changed%20and%20What%20It%20Means%20for%20B2B/sge-ai-mode-sge-to-ai-mode-timeline-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=sge-ai-mode-sge-to-ai-mode-timeline-blog-1600x900.png)

The Search Generative Experience, known as SGE, was where Google first showed generative AI inside Google Search. Google announced it on May 10, 2023, as [an experiment in Search Labs](https://blog.google/products/search/generative-ai-search/), its early-access program.

At launch it was English only, limited to the U.S., and available in the Chrome browser on desktop and in the Google app. Google also warned that Search will not always get it right.

The experiment did not stay an experiment. Here is the sequence, with the date and Google's own page for each step.

- **May 10, 2023:** Google introduced the Search Generative Experience as a Search Labs experiment.
- **May 14, 2024:** Google said [AI Overviews would begin rolling out to everyone in the U.S.](https://blog.google/products/search/generative-ai-google-search-may-2024/), after the Search Labs experiment had been used billions of times.
- **October 28, 2024:** Google [expanded AI Overviews to more than 100 countries and territories](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/ai-overviews-search-october-2024/) and said the feature would have more than 1 billion global users every month.
- **March 5, 2025:** Google introduced AI Mode as [an early experiment in Labs](https://blog.google/products/search/ai-mode-search/), open to a limited group of testers who opted in.
- **May 20, 2025:** Google said [AI Mode would roll out to everyone in the U.S.](https://blog.google/products/search/google-search-ai-mode-update/) without a Labs sign-up.

The name SGE faded because the experiment graduated, and Google AI Overviews took its place on the Google search results page. What began as the Search Generative Experience is now the AI Overviews box on a results page, and the same technology powers a separate tab called AI Mode.

## What the dated evidence shows about AI Overviews and AI Mode

Google publishes its own usage figures, and they are the best evidence for how fast buyer behavior is moving. They come from Google, so read them as the company's description of its own product, not an independent audit.

On May 19, 2026, Google's I/O keynote said AI Overviews has [over 2.5 billion monthly active users](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/sundar-pichai-io-2026/) and that AI Mode, in about a year, had surpassed 1 billion monthly active users. The same keynote called AI Mode the biggest upgrade to Search ever and described Search as feeling more like an ongoing conversation.

Google's own research on how people use Google AI Mode adds detail. In a May 19, 2026 post, Google said [the average AI Mode search is three times as long as a traditional Search query](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/ai-mode-us-insights/). It also said voice or image input now accounts for over a sixth of U.S. searches.

Earlier, in May 2025, Google reported that AI Overviews was [driving over 10% more usage for the types of queries that show them](https://blog.google/products/search/google-search-ai-mode-update/), using internal data from September 2024 to April 2025 in large markets such as the U.S. and India.

Read together, the numbers say two things. People are using AI answers at a very large scale, and they are typing and speaking longer, more specific questions than they did in a classic search bar. Searchers can also dig deeper in one session instead of starting over.

## How generative search differs from traditional search

Traditional search relied on keyword matching and indexing algorithms, then returned a ranked list of pages for the reader to open and compare. Generative search works from context. It combines information from multiple sources, brings different perspectives together into one coherent summary, and attaches embedded citations so a reader can verify each claim.

That design handles complex queries better than a list of links, and it cuts the time spent gathering information from several pages.

Business and market research is an obvious early use, alongside education, where educators gather resources and draft lesson plans, content creation and software development. Verification still falls to the user, which is why the citations matter.

## What AI Mode adds beyond a summary

AI Mode is more than a longer summary. Google's March 2025 post says it runs on a custom version of Gemini 2.0, the model family Google also brought to AI Overviews for harder coding, advanced math and multimodal questions.

At Google I/O in May 2025, Google described a Deep Search option that runs hundreds of searches and produces a fully cited research report, and a Search Live option that lets people talk about what their camera sees.

For a buyer, that is an interactive experience built for deeper research. Someone can ask for side by side comparisons of two approaches, then ask why one fits a company of their size, without leaving the page.

Google also said AI Mode can use past searches, and optionally connected apps, to personalize results, and that users can turn this on or off.

## How AI Mode differs from AI Overviews

![Two overlapping groups, AI Overviews and AI Mode, with your pages as the shared region that both features read.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/AEO/Awareness/From%20SGE%20to%20AI%20Mode%20-%20How%20Google%20AI%20Search%20Changed%20and%20What%20It%20Means%20for%20B2B/sge-ai-mode-ai-overviews-vs-ai-mode-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=sge-ai-mode-ai-overviews-vs-ai-mode-blog-1600x900.png)

Both are AI features inside Google Search, both build generative AI answers from multiple sources, and they behave differently.

Google's [Search Central documentation](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) describes AI Overviews as a way to get the gist of a complicated topic or question more quickly. It describes AI Mode as most helpful for queries that need further exploration, reasoning or complex comparisons.

| | AI Overviews | AI Mode |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Where it appears | A summary on the regular Google results page | A separate, conversational experience |
| What it is for | A quick overview of a topic | Deeper research and comparisons |
| How a person uses it | Reads the summary, then clicks a link or scrolls on | Asks follow-up questions and keeps going |

### How query fan-out changes what gets found

Both features may use a technique Google calls query fan-out. Instead of running your single question, the system runs several related searches across subtopics and data sources, then assembles the results into one response.

AI Mode runs these searches at once, so the answer arrives as a single page. Google describes this in its [AI Mode announcement](https://blog.google/products/search/ai-mode-search/).

For example, a B2B buyer who asks "how do we fix lead handoff between marketing and sales" triggers several searches on routing rules, response time, ownership and reporting. Websites can be found for a sub-question they never targeted, which is why a complete, well-organized answer beats a thin page built around one phrase.

### What Google says about follow-up questions and links

Because AI Mode takes follow-up questions, a buyer can refine a topic in one session instead of opening ten tabs.

Google says these features can display a wider and more diverse set of source links than a classic web search, so the traditional blue links are no longer the only route to your site. That is an opening for a specialist B2B site, but only if the page answers the sub-question clearly.

## What this means for B2B revenue teams

Two changes matter for a revenue leader, and neither requires a new tool.

First, discovery moves earlier and happens inside the answer. A buyer can get a comparison, a shortlist of considerations and a set of cited sources without visiting your site. Our article on [zero-click searches and AI Overviews for B2B](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/zero-click-searches-ai-overviews-b2b) explains what that does to traffic and attribution.

Second, there is no special switch to flip. Google says that to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet, and that there are no additional technical requirements.

Structured data and schema markup still help search engines read a page, but Google does not describe them as a requirement for these features.

The ordinary work of helpful content and a healthy site is what counts, which means SEO still matters. Ranking in traditional search results remains the entry ticket, because the AI features draw on web content that Google has already indexed.

### Why long-tail keywords and complex topics now matter

The questions are longer and more specific. A long-tail query, once a niche concern, is now the normal shape of a search, and complex topics get a full answer instead of ten blue links.

Informational keywords, the how and why questions buyers ask early, are where AI summaries help most. Pages that state a direct answer in plain words, then support it, fit this pattern better than pages written around a headline keyword.

### How to access Google AI Mode and test it

At the May 2025 rollout, Google said a new AI Mode tab would appear in Search and in the Google app. To access AI Mode, open Google Search, choose that tab and type your question. You can test AI Overviews by searching the same question on the main results page.

### Where AI answers can go wrong

Google is open about the limits. Its 2023 announcement says there are known limitations with generative AI and that Search will not always get it right. A summary can contain inaccurate information or misleading summaries of a source, so careful buyers still open the cited page to check.

That is good news for websites that state things plainly and back them with a dated source, because the click-through is where trust gets confirmed. It is also a reason to keep your own pages accurate and current.

### How to read the data in Google Search Console

Google says sites that appear in these features are included in overall search traffic in Search Console, reported in the Performance report under the Web search type.

That means you cannot yet isolate AI answers with a separate filter from Google, so treat movement in impressions and clicks on question-style queries as a signal to investigate, not a verdict.

## What to do first this quarter

![One route through six steps in three stages: choose the buying questions, run each in Google and note where you appear, then rewrite the weakest answers, check the basics and repeat the check each month.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/AEO/Awareness/From%20SGE%20to%20AI%20Mode%20-%20How%20Google%20AI%20Search%20Changed%20and%20What%20It%20Means%20for%20B2B/sge-ai-mode-ai-mode-first-quarter-plan-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=sge-ai-mode-ai-mode-first-quarter-plan-blog-1600x900.png)

The goal for the first month is to learn where you already show up and to fix the pages that matter most. Four steps are enough.

1. **Pick ten buying questions.** List the questions your best-fit buyers ask before they talk to sales, written the way they would speak them, in full sentences.
2. **Run them in Google.** Search each question, open AI Mode, and note whether your brand or any page of yours is named or linked. Record the result in one shared sheet.
3. **Rewrite the weakest answers.** For each question you lost, open the page that should answer it and lead with a direct answer in the first two sentences, then add the supporting detail a buyer would ask next.
4. **Check the basics.** Confirm the pages are indexed, return a normal status, and are not blocked from showing a snippet. Our [guide to optimizing content for AI search](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/how-to-optimize-content-for-ai-search) walks through the page work in detail.

Repeat the question check monthly and keep the sheet. It becomes your own record of what changes, which is more useful than any single report. It also gives your go-to-market team a shared view of where buyers meet your brand before a form is ever filled in.

## What you gain when this is done properly

### What sales gains

Buyers who arrive after an AI-assisted research session have already compared options and heard your category explained. Sales conversations start further along, with better questions and fewer basic objections, because the pages your team wrote did their job upstream.

### What marketing gains

Marketing gets a clear list of the questions that matter and a repeatable way to see whether it is cited. Content stops being measured only by sessions and starts being judged on whether it gives a complete, quotable answer to the questions your best-fit accounts ask.

### What customer success gains

Customers also use AI search to troubleshoot and compare. Clear pages on onboarding, integration and best practice reduce repeat questions, give customer success teams something to link to, and keep your own explanation of your product in front of the people who already pay for it.

## Where Google AI search goes next

Google's own direction is clear from its 2026 keynote: Search is becoming more conversational, with agents that work in the background and answers built for individual questions. Features will keep changing and names will keep changing with them, as SGE did.

What does not change is the work underneath. Buyers want a direct, trustworthy answer, and the sites that supply one will be the sites that get cited. Treat each new Google feature as a reason to review your answers, not as a reason to rebuild your site.

## Frequently asked questions

What was the Search Generative Experience?

The Search Generative Experience, or SGE, was Google's 2023 experiment that put generative AI answers into Google Search. Google announced it on May 10, 2023, as an experiment in Search Labs. It later became AI Overviews, and the name SGE is no longer how Google describes the feature.

What is the difference between AI Overviews and AI Mode?

AI Overviews is a summary that appears on the regular Google results page, built to give the gist of a topic quickly. AI Mode is a separate conversational experience for deeper questions, comparisons and follow-ups. Both show links to the web and can use query fan-out.

Do I need special optimization to appear in Google AI Mode?

Google says no. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet, and Google lists no additional technical requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Strong, helpful content that answers the full question is the practical focus, not a special format.

Does AI Mode replace regular Google search?

Google's announcements describe AI Mode as an added experience for questions that need exploration, while AI Overviews appear on the standard results page. Users move between all of them, so test your visibility in each instead of assuming one will vanish.

How do I see whether my site appears in AI answers?

Search your key buying questions in Google and open AI Mode, then note whether your pages are cited. Google reports traffic from these features inside the Web search type in Search Console, without a separate filter, so manual checks and trend watching in impressions are the practical method.
