If you lead revenue at a growing B2B company, digital PR is the most direct way to get your brand named on pages that AI engines read. You create something worth reporting, give it to the people who cover your industry, and earn mentions that sit outside your own website. For how engines weigh the two, see [brand mentions vs backlinks](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/brand-mentions-vs-backlinks).

Some people call it digital public relations. This guide is for CEOs, founders, CROs and revenue leaders, and for the marketing lead who runs the work.

You get six steps for a digital PR campaign, what done looks like at each step, and the digital PR mistakes that waste a quarter. It builds on [why your brand is missing from AI answers](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/ai-search-visibility-brand-missing).

| **Digital PR** The practice of earning media coverage, brand mentions and links from online publishers by giving them newsworthy content, expert commentary or original data, instead of paying for placement. |
| --- |

## By the end you will have a digital PR program you can repeat

Most B2B companies run digital PR once, as a burst around a launch, and then stop. A digital PR program is different. It gives you a standing asset, a defined list of media outlets and a way to measure what came back.

- One newsworthy asset published on your own website, with the method behind it.
- A target list of industry publications, news sites and other online publishers grouped by the topic they cover.
- A pitch that a busy editor can judge in a few seconds.
- A monthly check of coverage, brand mentions and what AI engines say about you.

## What to have in place before you start

![Digital PR at the centre with four things to have ready first: a clear point of view, data or expertise, a website that explains who you are and a named spokesperson.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/AEO/Consideration/Digital%20PR%20for%20B2B%20-%20How%20to%20Earn%20Mentions%20AI%20Engines%20Read/digital-pr-digital-pr-asset-checklist-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=digital-pr-digital-pr-asset-checklist-blog-1600x900.png)

Check these four things first. A digital PR campaign built on weak foundations earns weak media coverage.

- **A clear point of view.** You need a position on your market that a reader could disagree with. Without one there is nothing to quote.
- **Data or expertise nobody else has.** This can be proprietary data from your own customers, survey answers or the judgment of a named expert on your team.
- **A website that explains who you are.** Editors and AI engines both check your own website. Make sure your [entity signals are consistent](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/knowledge-graph-seo-entity-authority) before you ask anyone to write about you.
- **A named spokesperson.** One person, with a real role and a real bio, who can answer questions from a reporter within a day.

### How digital PR differs from traditional PR and link building

Traditional PR works through traditional media such as print media, television and radio, and it is largely one-way. It leans on estimates such as circulation numbers or advertising value equivalency, and the coverage fades with the life of the publication. It rarely improves search engine results unless a digital mention comes with it.

Digital PR works through online channels, where a story can be shared at once and linked directly to your website. Results are easier to track: links, brand mentions, search rankings and website traffic. A single article can keep sending visitors and links over time.

It is also not the same as link building. Link building is one part of digital PR, but the difference is storytelling: the best links come from other websites that want to share a story worth telling.

### Know what earned media is

Media comes in three kinds. Owned media is what you publish yourself. Paid media is what you buy, such as advertising or sponsored posts. Earned media is coverage someone else chooses to give you because your story is worth telling. Digital PR produces earned media, and you do not pay the publication for it.

Influencer marketing sits in between: it can be paid, earned or both.

You still spend money on earned media: on research, writing, design and time. What you do not buy is the placement, and that is why readers and engines treat it differently. For what to build first, see [linkable assets that earn citations](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/linkable-assets).

### Why a digital PR strategy matters for AI search and search engine optimization

Google's documentation on [AI features in Search](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimizations beyond the fundamentals of search engine optimization.

That puts the weight on the basics: being worth citing, and being described consistently across the web. Your digital PR efforts are one of the few ways to do the second part.

Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands in 2025 and found that [branded web mentions correlated with brand visibility in AI Overviews at 0.664](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-overview-brand-correlation/), against 0.218 for backlinks. A correlation is not proof of cause, but it points where to look.

Muck Rack, which sells a tool that tracks AI citations, reports that across more than 25 million prompts since July 2025, [84% of the citations in AI answers came from earned media](https://generativepulse.ai/). That is one vendor's classification of sources, so treat it as direction rather than a promise.

## How to run digital PR in six steps

![One route through six steps in three stages: pick a provable question and create newsworthy content, publish the asset and build a topic target list, then pitch one finding and measure mentions, links and AI answers.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/AEO/Consideration/Digital%20PR%20for%20B2B%20-%20How%20to%20Earn%20Mentions%20AI%20Engines%20Read/digital-pr-six-step-digital-pr-flow-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=digital-pr-six-step-digital-pr-flow-blog-1600x900.png)

Each step ends with what done looks like, so you know when to move on.

### 1. Choose the question your buyers ask and you can answer with evidence

Start from the questions buyers type into search engines and AI engines before they talk to sales. Pick one where you hold facts others lack.

A digital PR strategy that begins with what you can prove will outperform one that begins with what you would like to say, and it is the first test of a successful digital PR campaign.

Write the question as a sentence, and the claim you can support in one more. Name your target audience beside it. If you cannot support the claim, choose another question.

You are done when one question and one evidence-backed claim are written on a single page and your sales lead agrees buyers ask it.

### 2. Create newsworthy content around that claim

To create newsworthy content, give it at least one of these traits: it is new, it is specific, it affects a group of people, or it contradicts a common belief. A product update has none of them. A finding does.

These digital PR tactics work best for a B2B company: proprietary data from your own systems, a survey of your market, expert commentary on a change that is already in the news, a collaboration with a partner or researcher, and a clear explanation of a problem your industry has not named.

Newsjacking, meaning a timely comment on a story already in the news, can win attention quickly, but only when you have real expertise to add. Create stories around people and numbers you can defend.

Keep the research honest. State the sample, the dates and the limits. Publications and AI engines both prefer a source that shows how it knows what it knows.

You are done when the asset exists, a second person has checked every figure, and the method is written down in plain words.

### 3. Publish the asset on your own website first

Your site is the source that everything else points to. Publish the full asset there, with the method, the date, an author and a short summary near the top. Give it a stable address that you will not change.

Add a page section that journalists can use: the main finding in two sentences, quotable lines, charts they may reuse and a contact for questions.

Link it to the topic pages it supports, so the asset strengthens your content marketing and your digital marketing instead of sitting alone. Editors judge you on the quality content they find there.

You are done when a reporter can open one page, understand the finding in a minute, and find your contact and your method without asking.

### 4. Build a target list by topic, not by famous name

A list of famous names produces silence. Build the list by topic instead. Search for the recent articles about your question, then note which industry publications, trade titles and online publishers wrote them and which reporters or editors wrote the pieces.

Rank each entry by three tests: do they cover this topic often, do their readers match your target audience, and do they quote outside sources. Keep a short list of media outlets and reporters you can research properly, rather than a long list you cannot personalize.

Social media platforms can help here. Follow the reporters you chose, read what they share and note what they ask for.

You are done when you have a list of reporters and editors, each with a recent article that proves they cover your topic.

### 5. Pitch with one finding and one offer

Write the pitch in four sentences. The first states the finding. The second says why it matters to that reporter's readers. The third offers something specific, such as the data, a chart or a named expert. The fourth gives your contact details.

Press releases still have a place when the news is genuinely new and you want a record on your own site. A press release goes to everyone at once, so a personal note to the right person usually does more. Follow up once, a few days later, with something new to add. Then stop.

Build relationships over time, because PR professionals on both sides remember who was useful. Reply quickly when a reporter asks for a comment on a story you are not part of. That is how a one-off pitch turns into a regular source.

You are done when every person on the list has had one personal pitch and you have logged each reply, including the refusals.

### 6. Measure mentions, links and AI answers, then adjust

Measure on three levels. First, media coverage: which pages mention you, in what context, and whether they link to you. Second, media mentions and brand mentions across the wider web, including unlinked ones. Third, what AI engines say when they are asked the question you chose in step 1.

Watch branded search volume as well, because a covered story can send people to look for your name.

Test the same set of prompts every month and record whether your brand appears, what is said and which sources are named. Use [the AI search analytics approach](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/ai-search-analytics-measure-visibility) to keep the record consistent.

Also watch referral traffic, website traffic to the asset and the leads that come from covered pages, so you can show how digital PR helps generate leads.

Then feed what you learn into the next round, using the loop in [the AEO test-and-learn strategy](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/aeo-strategy-test-and-learn). Keep what earned coverage and drop what did not. Social listening tools can help you spot new mentions between rounds.

You are done when you have a monthly record of coverage, mentions and AI answers, and the next campaign is chosen from it.

## Digital PR mistakes that waste a campaign

- **Pitching your product.** Editors write about their readers' problems. Lead with the finding.
- **Treating links as the only goal.** High quality backlinks help search engine rankings, but mentions without links still tell engines who you are.
- **Buying coverage and calling it earned.** [Google's spam policies](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/essentials/spam-policies) list buying links and sending products in exchange for links as link spam. Paid placements should carry a [sponsored label](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/qualify-outbound-links).
- **Skipping the method.** A claim without a stated method is easy to ignore and hard to cite.
- **Mass emailing.** A generic message to a long list damages your name with the people you want to know.
- **Outsourcing without a brief.** A digital PR agency can run the outreach, but it cannot invent your evidence.
- **Stopping after one campaign.** Coverage compounds when the same topic returns with new evidence.
- **Chasing quantity.** Ten relevant mentions beat a hundred in places your buyers never read.
- **Leaving sales out.** Your sales team hears the questions that make the best campaigns.

## What you gain when this is done properly

![Proof at the centre with three arcs for what sales, marketing and customer success each gain from earned coverage.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/AEO/Consideration/Digital%20PR%20for%20B2B%20-%20How%20to%20Earn%20Mentions%20AI%20Engines%20Read/digital-pr-what-each-team-gains-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=digital-pr-what-each-team-gains-blog-1600x900.png)

A working digital PR program gives you third-party proof that you control the supply of. Coverage in respected publications reinforces your reputation and positions your experts as credible thought leaders.

It helps you build brand awareness among people who have not heard of you, and it raises brand visibility on the pages engines already read.

It also supports business growth by shortening the trust gap, and it gives you a stronger voice in shaping the online story if something goes wrong. The gains show up differently for each team.

### Sales hears your name before the first call

Prospects who have seen your finding quoted in a trade publication arrive with context. They are potential customers who already trust the source.

Discovery calls start from the problem rather than from who you are. Your sales team can also send a covered article to a stakeholder who needs outside proof, instead of asking them to trust your own claims.

### Marketing gets assets that every channel can use

One asset feeds your content marketing, your social posts, your email and your talks. Marketing gains a reason to publish original research instead of generic advice, and a clear way to show what earned a mention. It also gives the team evidence for the next AEO test.

### Customer success gets proof to share with customers

Customers want social proof that their supplier is respected in their industry. Coverage gives customer success something to point to during reviews and renewals. The questions customers ask also show which topics deserve the next campaign.

## Start with one question and one asset

Digital PR for AI search is not a trick. It builds brand authority by earning attention from people who cover your market, then checking whether engines now describe you accurately. Pick one question this week, build one asset and pitch a short, researched list.

## Frequently asked questions

What is a digital PR campaign?

A digital PR campaign is a planned effort to earn coverage online around one newsworthy asset, such as original data or expert commentary. It includes the asset, a list of publications, personal pitches and measurement of coverage, brand mentions and links. It usually runs for several weeks and then repeats.

Is digital PR the same as link building?

No. Link building is one possible result of digital PR, not the whole job. Digital PR aims to earn editorial coverage and brand mentions, which may include links. Link building on its own can involve tactics that have nothing to do with news, and some break search policies.

How is digital PR different from traditional PR?

Traditional PR works through print media, broadcast and press events, and measures reach. Digital PR works through online publishers and search, and also measures links, brand mentions and traffic. The skills overlap, but digital PR is built around content that can be found, cited and checked online.

Do you pay for earned media?

You do not pay the publication for earned media, because the coverage is the editor's decision. You still pay for the work that earns it, including research, writing and time. If money changes hands for the placement, it is paid media and should be labeled that way.

Does digital PR help AI search visibility?

It can. Mentions on independent pages give AI engines more places that describe your brand and category. Research on brand visibility in AI Overviews shows a link between branded web mentions and appearance, but it does not prove cause, so measure your own results monthly.
