If you lead marketing or revenue at a growing B2B company, the short answer is this: ChatGPT search is a conversational AI chatbot and assistant that searches the web when a question needs it, and Perplexity is an answer engine that searches the web for every question. For how buyers phrase those questions, see [conversational search](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/conversational-search).

Optimize for both, because the page work is the same, but test each separately.

This article is for CEOs, founders, CROs and marketing leaders deciding where buyers now look for answers. Both are artificial intelligence tools that put a written answer ahead of a list of links.

You will get a plain definition of each engine, a side-by-side table of how each finds and cites sources, decision rules for B2B teams, and a way to cover both without funding two programs.

| **ChatGPT Search** ChatGPT search is the feature of ChatGPT that searches the web when a question needs current information and answers with citations that link to the sources it used. |
| --- |

| **Perplexity** Perplexity is an AI-powered answer engine that searches the web in real time for each question and returns a conversational summary with numbered citations linking to its sources. |
| --- |

## ChatGPT search rewrites your question and cites the pages it used

![One route through six steps in three stages: a buyer asks, ChatGPT decides to search, rewrites the question into queries and reviews results, then writes an answer with citations the buyer can open.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/AEO/Decision/ChatGPT%20vs%20Perplexity%20-%20Which%20AI%20Search%20Engine%20Should%20Your%20B2B%20Team%20Optimize%20For/chatgpt-vs-perplexity-chatgpt-search-flow-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=chatgpt-vs-perplexity-chatgpt-search-flow-blog-1600x900.png)

OpenAI describes the feature in its [help center article on searching the web with ChatGPT](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-searching-the-web-with-chatgpt). ChatGPT can search the web to answer questions with current information and links to relevant sources.

It may do this automatically when a question would benefit from up to date information, or you can start a search yourself from the tools menu.

Behind the scenes, ChatGPT search sometimes works with third-party search providers. When it does, OpenAI says it typically rewrites your question into one or more targeted queries and sends those to the provider. After reviewing the first results, it may send more specific queries.

That means the words in a buyer's prompt are not always the words that reach a search index.

### What a ChatGPT answer shows a buyer

Responses that use web search may include citations. A buyer can select a citation to open its source, or select Sources, when available, to see cited sources and other relevant links.

For you, a citation is a chance to be seen, not a guarantee that the answer about your company is right.

### What are the limitations of ChatGPT search?

OpenAI is open about them. Results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect. Citations also come from web search, so an answer that did not search may carry none. Searches count against your plan's usage limits.

If memory is turned on, ChatGPT may use saved memories when it rewrites a query, so two people can send the same prompt and get different searches. In a managed workspace, such as one on an enterprise plan, an administrator decides whether web search is on for a buyer's role.

Like any AI chatbot, it can also state incorrect facts, often called hallucinations.

### Who can use it

OpenAI says web search is available on its Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans, and that people who are not signed in can also use it, subject to each plan's usage limits.

You can search on chatgpt.com and in the ChatGPT desktop and mobile apps, ask by voice, and see images with their sources in a response. ChatGPT runs on OpenAI's GPT models and also connects to apps and outside services, such as restaurant booking.

So the free tier reaches a wide audience of casual users and professionals alike.

## Perplexity searches in real time and numbers every citation

![One route through six steps in three stages: a buyer asks, Perplexity interprets the question, searches the web and summarizes what it found, then adds numbered citations the buyer can open or follow up.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/AEO/Decision/ChatGPT%20vs%20Perplexity%20-%20Which%20AI%20Search%20Engine%20Should%20Your%20B2B%20Team%20Optimize%20For/chatgpt-vs-perplexity-perplexity-answer-flow-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=chatgpt-vs-perplexity-perplexity-answer-flow-blog-1600x900.png)

Perplexity's help center describes what it is on its [What is Perplexity page](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10352155-what-is-perplexity): an AI-powered search engine that searches the web and delivers conversational answers backed by sources. Where traditional search engines list many links, Perplexity aims to give a direct answer that synthesizes information from multiple sources.

Its [How does Perplexity work page](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10352895-how-does-perplexity-work) lays out three steps: it interprets the question, searches the web, and summarizes what it found. Each answer includes numbered citations linking to the original sources, so a reader can verify the claim or dig deeper.

### Pro Search, Deep Research and follow-up questions

Perplexity offers several ways to run a real-time web search. Pro Search conducts research across multiple sources and lets a subscriber choose among advanced AI models. Perplexity offers multiple models, including Claude and GPT, so a subscriber can match the model to the research need.

Perplexity AI says its [Deep Research](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10352895-how-does-perplexity-work) feature performs dozens of searches, reads hundreds of sources and delivers detailed answers as a report in two to four minutes. Its Pro plan also adds a feature that builds reports, spreadsheets and simple web apps from a prompt.

Perplexity AI says it relies on contextual understanding of your question, using language models that understand context, and follow-up questions keep the context of earlier ones, so a buyer can narrow a topic in a short conversation. Free users get a limited number of Pro Searches per day, while subscribers have extended access.

### How good is Perplexity AI at citing sources?

Perplexity AI puts source transparency at the center of its pitch: every answer links to the sources behind it. That helps fact checking and gives answers in an easy to read format, because a reader can open each citation. It does not make every answer right.

Perplexity AI's own page says reviewing the original sources yourself remains the best way to build confidence.

Perplexity also marks some cited domains with a Government, Academic or Trusted label. Its page on [source labels](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/20260806-understanding-source-labels) says payments do not affect a label and that having no label is not a negative judgment.

## Perplexity vs ChatGPT: the key differences at a glance

Perplexity vs ChatGPT comes down to where search sits in the product, and the key differences start there. In ChatGPT, web search is one tool inside a conversational AI assistant that decides when to use it. In Perplexity, search is the product. Unlike Perplexity, ChatGPT decides for itself whether a question needs the web.

Unlike traditional search engines, both give a written answer first and links second.

## ChatGPT and Perplexity compared side by side

![Two overlapping groups, ChatGPT search and Perplexity, with your pages as the shared region that both engines read.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/AEO/Decision/ChatGPT%20vs%20Perplexity%20-%20Which%20AI%20Search%20Engine%20Should%20Your%20B2B%20Team%20Optimize%20For/chatgpt-vs-perplexity-engines-compared-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=chatgpt-vs-perplexity-engines-compared-blog-1600x900.png)

Both Perplexity and ChatGPT are AI search tools that search the web, show citations and take follow-up questions. They differ in how a buyer starts a search and what a site owner controls. This tool comparison covers the key categories side by side.

| Criterion | ChatGPT search | Perplexity |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What it is | A general AI chatbot and assistant with a search feature | An AI-powered answer engine built around search |
| When it searches the web | Automatically when a question benefits from current information, or when the user chooses Search | For each question, as it interprets, searches and summarizes |
| How it finds sources | Works with third-party search providers and rewrites the question into targeted queries; its crawler is OAI-SearchBot | Searches the web in real time; its crawler is PerplexityBot |
| How sources appear | Citations in the response, plus a Sources view when available | Numbered citations linking to original sources, with some domains labeled |
| Deeper research | Not covered in OpenAI's web search help article | Pro Search and Deep Research |
| Free access | Web search on Free plan and for signed-out users, within usage limits | Standard search with a limited number of Pro Searches per day for free users |
| What OpenAI or Perplexity says about ranking | Ranks results using multiple factors; placement is not guaranteed | Recommends allowing PerplexityBot so your site can be surfaced |
| Strong fit | Drafting, creative writing, content creation and analysis, with search added | Quick, sourced answers and fact checking on a topic |

Read the last row of the table as our reading, not a claim either company makes. Neither of these AI tools publishes a ranking formula, so treat any article that promises one with caution. Our guide to [AI search ranking factors](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/ai-search-ranking-factors) covers what the evidence does and does not show.

### Perplexity vs ChatGPT on paid plans and developer access

Both companies also sell paid plans, and both keep a free tier or free versions with limits. OpenAI's plan list includes Plus and Pro, each with its own usage limits, and Perplexity sells Perplexity Pro with extended Pro Search access.

Its [Pro page](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10352901-what-is-perplexity-pro) lists more citations per answer, increased file and photo uploads, enhanced image generation and models from several AI labs. OpenAI's [pricing page](https://chatgpt.com/pricing) shows the free plan with limited file uploads, image creation, voice chats and deep research, and Plus expanding each of them. Beyond search, both tools take uploaded documents.

Perplexity accepts PDFs, images, code, audio and video through its [file uploads feature](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10354807-file-uploads), with a weekly allowance that depends on the plan.

OpenAI's pricing page also lists file uploads, image creation, voice, plugins, apps, extensions for spreadsheet and office tools, coding and data analysis among ChatGPT's features, so ChatGPT can generate images, connect to other apps, and run and test code through its coding and data analysis features.

Prices change, so check each company's pricing page before you budget.

Both also publish developer APIs. Perplexity describes a [Search API for ranked web results and an Agent API](https://docs.perplexity.ai/getting-started/overview) for web-grounded answers with citations, and OpenAI documents a [web search tool](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/tools-web-search) whose responses include inline citations by default. Your pages can therefore be retrieved inside other companies' products, not only in the two consumer apps.

## Perplexity vs ChatGPT: which is the best AI search engine for B2B research?

In the Perplexity vs ChatGPT comparison, neither wins every job. There is no single best AI search engine, because the right question is which one your buyers use for which job. A buyer checking a vendor claim wants fast, sourced answers to factual queries and does their own fact checking.

A buyer comparing three options wants a longer conversation about complex topics. Some comparison articles rate Perplexity as more dependable for research and ChatGPT as stronger for creative work and coding. We found no dated original study that settles either claim, so treat them as opinion.

For both jobs the useful feature is the citation. Neither company promises factual accuracy, accurate answers or reliable answers on every question, so the habit that protects a buyer is to open the source. That habit also tells you what to write: pages that make a claim easy to check are the ones worth citing.

## Perplexity vs ChatGPT for content creation and creative writing

Marketing teams also use these AI tools to produce content, not only to find it. ChatGPT is a general AI assistant, so teams often reach for it for creative content generation, content creation, creative writing and to generate blog posts, while Perplexity's research features suit gathering sources before you write.

Those two roles are our reading, not an OpenAI or Perplexity claim.

Whatever an AI tool drafts, a person should run fact checking before it is published, because buyers repeat that step when they open your citations.

## The crawlers decide whether your pages are eligible

Eligibility comes before everything else. If an AI search engine cannot reach your site, nothing you write will be cited.

### How OpenAI separates search from training

OpenAI's [bots documentation](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots) names three user agents. OAI-SearchBot is for search, and OpenAI says sites opted out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot is used to make its foundation models more useful and safe, so blocking it signals that your content should stay out of training data.

ChatGPT-User acts when a person asks, and OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply to it.

OpenAI's help article adds that, to be eligible for inclusion, a site should allow OAI-SearchBot and make sure its host or content delivery network allows OpenAI's published searchbot IP addresses. It also says placement is not guaranteed.

### How Perplexity separates search from user requests

Perplexity's [bot guidance](https://docs.perplexity.ai/guides/bots) works the same way. PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in Perplexity results, and Perplexity says it is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models. Perplexity-User supports a person's request and generally ignores robots.txt, because the person asked for the page.

Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot in robots.txt and allowing its published IP ranges. If a firewall sits in front of your site, you may need to allow both bots.

You can allow the search crawlers and still decline training, because each setting is independent. Both companies say robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to take effect, as [OpenAI](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots) and [Perplexity](https://docs.perplexity.ai/guides/bots) document, so ask your web team to check the firewall as well as the robots.txt file.

## Decision rules: which of these AI tools to put first

Choose by the evidence you have, not by which brand sounds more current. The ChatGPT vs Perplexity choice is not a one-time bet, and these rules are our reading, not claims either company makes.

### If you do not know where your buyers ask, test both with the same questions

Write twenty questions your buyers ask before they talk to sales. Run each in both engines, note which sources are cited and record whether your site appears. Our guide to [measuring AI search visibility](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/ai-search-analytics-measure-visibility) shows how to keep the log.

### If your team researches in short, sourced bursts, start with Perplexity

When buyers want a quick answer with sources they can open, an answer engine fits. Make sure your pages state one clear answer near the top so a numbered citation to your page is easy to justify.

### If your buyers draft, compare and analyze in one long conversation, start with ChatGPT

Search is one tool inside a wider AI assistant, used for creative writing, content creation and analysis. Pages that explain a decision plainly and name the criteria help the assistant when it reaches for outside information.

### If one engine cites you and the other does not, check access before content

Look at the crawler rules and the firewall for the missing engine first. Then compare which pages the other engine cites. Often the difference is access or a page that buries its answer. Treat it as an information retrieval problem first: can the engine fetch the page, and can it find the answer on it?

### If you are a small team, run one program

Do not build two content plans for two AI search engines. The page work is shared, and our comparison of [AEO, GEO and LLMO](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/aeo-vs-geo-vs-llmo) explains why the terms describe one job. Use separate tests, not separate content, so the AI search work stays in one place.

## How to cover both engines with one program

The cleanest approach is to treat the pages as shared and the tests as separate. It also gives you a better search experience to measure, because you compare the same pages across both.

1. Fix access first. Allow OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, confirm the firewall lets their published IP ranges through, and decide your policy on training crawlers separately.
2. Put the answer first. Start each page with a direct answer to the question a buyer asks, then support it with sourced evidence.
3. Re-run your buyer questions monthly and note what changes. Answers differ between runs, so look for patterns, not single results.

## What you gain when this is done properly

When both engines can reach your pages and the pages answer buyer questions clearly, you are cited more reliably in the places buyers now begin their research. The gain reaches every team that touches the buyer.

### Sales meets buyers who arrive already informed

When an engine cites your page, a buyer arrives with your framing and your terms in mind. Sales spends less time correcting basics and more time on fit, price and timing.

### Marketing gets one program to measure instead of two

One set of pages, one crawler policy and one question log mean marketing can test each engine without doubling the work. Content creation focuses on pages that answer questions and not on formats chosen for a single tool.

### Customer success gets a source customers can trust

The same plain answers help current customers find setup and usage guidance in AI search. Fewer routine questions reach the support queue, and customers see the same words you use in the product.

## Pick the engine your buyers use, then fix what both need

You do not have to choose one winner in the ChatGPT vs Perplexity debate. ChatGPT search and Perplexity both search the web, both cite sources and both depend on pages that are reachable, clear and current.

Start with access, test each engine with your own buyer questions, and let the results tell you where to put effort next.

## Frequently asked questions

 Is ChatGPT search free?

OpenAI says web search is available on the Free plan as well as paid plans, and that people who are not signed in can also use it. Searches are subject to your plan's usage limits, so heavy users may reach a limit before light users do.

 Is Perplexity free or paid?

Perplexity offers standard search to everyone, including free versions with limits. Its help center says free users get a limited number of Pro Searches per day, while subscribers have extended access to Pro Search and a model selector. The free tier is enough to test whether it cites your pages.

Which is best, Perplexity vs ChatGPT, for accurate answers?

Neither company promises accuracy. OpenAI says results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect, and Perplexity says reviewing the original sources yourself remains the best way to build confidence. Treat both AI tools as starting points and open the cited page before relying on any claim.

Do I need different content for ChatGPT and Perplexity?

No. Both engines search the web and cite pages, so the work is shared: allow their crawlers, answer questions directly and keep facts current. What differs is testing. Run your buyer questions in each engine and compare which pages get cited.

Can I block training and still appear in these engines?

Yes. OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not appear in ChatGPT search answers, while GPTBot relates to training. Perplexity says PerplexityBot is not used for foundation model training. Each setting is independent, so decide your policy per crawler.
