If you lead marketing or revenue at a B2B company, you can track ChatGPT referral traffic in GA4 by reading the AI Assistant channel in the traffic acquisition report, then building a custom channel group so ChatGPT visits sit in one row you control.

This article is for CEOs, founders, CROs and marketers who want to know how much AI traffic ChatGPT and other AI chatbots send to their website, which landing pages those visitors reach and what they do next.

You will get the setup steps, the metrics with their formulas, a weekly, monthly and quarterly routine, and an honest account of what GA4 cannot see.

| **Referral Traffic** Referral traffic is the set of visits that arrive on your site by following a link on another site or app, identified in analytics by the referring source. |
| --- |

## What good ChatGPT referral tracking looks like

Good tracking lets you analyze traffic from AI search in one place and answers four questions. How much traffic comes from ChatGPT and the other major AI platforms? Which pages do those visitors land on?

Do they engage and complete key actions, and how do their conversion rates compare with traditional search visitors? And is the trend moving in the right direction, compared with the same period last month?

It also states its limits. Referral data is a floor, not a full count, because a visit only appears as ChatGPT traffic when the referring source is correctly identified. Everything below is built to make that floor reliable, and to keep the unreliable parts clearly labeled.

Google now gives anyone with a Google Analytics account a head start. Its default channel group includes an [AI Assistant channel](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9756891), described as the channel by which users arrive from sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot or Grok.

It excludes Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. You cannot edit that default channel, and it cannot split ChatGPT from the other AI sources. A custom group can.

## Why a small channel still deserves its own report

The case for tracking is buyer behavior. In its [Buyers' Journey Survey 2024](https://www.forrester.com/blogs/the-future-of-b2b-buying-will-come-slowly-and-then-all-at-once/), Forrester found that 89% of B2B buyers reported using generative AI in at least one area of their purchasing process.

The click volume of AI referral traffic is still small. [BrightEdge research from September 2025](https://www.brightedge.com/news/press-releases/brightedge-data-finds-ai-accounts-less-1-search-organic-traffic-continues) found that visits from AI search platforms were less than 1% of referral traffic from January through August 2025.

Quality may differ from volume. In a [July 2025 study](https://www.semrush.com/blog/ai-search-seo-traffic-study/), Semrush reported that the average AI search visitor, tracked to a non-Google source like ChatGPT, was 4.4 times as valuable as an organic search visit, based on conversion rate.

The study also projected AI visitors could pass traditional search visitors by early 2028 for digital marketing and SEO topics. Treat that as a forecast, and check your own data.

## Check the default AI Assistant channel first

Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition. Google's [traffic acquisition report documentation](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/12923437) says the default dimension is Session default channel grouping, so each channel is a row. Look for AI Assistant.

Google's channel definitions explain how a visit lands there. The medium is set to "ai-assistant" and the campaign to "(ai-assistant)" when the referrer matches a list of AI assistants. No match means no row, so a missing row can mean no visits or no readable referrer.

To see the sources behind the row, change the primary dimension to Session source / medium. The report's search bar accepts a source name, as in Google's example of "google / organic", so search for the assistant's name to track traffic from one referral source.

## Build a channel group that separates ChatGPT traffic from everything else

![One route through six steps in three stages: open Channel groups and create a group, add an AI assistants channel that matches Source, then move it above Referral and save.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/AEO/Optimization/ChatGPT%20Referral%20Traffic%20-%20How%20to%20Track%20It%20in%20GA4/ai-referral-ai-channel-group-order-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=ai-referral-ai-channel-group-order-blog-1600x900.png)

A custom channel group is a set of rule-based categories for your traffic sources. Google's [custom channel groups page](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/13051316) includes a worked example for AI assistants, and the steps below follow it. You need Editor access or higher at the property level.

### Create the group and the channel

In the Admin panel, under Data display, open Channel groups. Select Create new channel group, which starts as a copy of the default group, then name it and add an optional description.

Select Add new channel, call it "AI assistants" and add a condition on the Source dimension that matches a regular expression. This regex filter is the heart of the setup.

A simple pattern covering the main AI sources looks like this: \`^.\*(chatgpt|openai|gemini|copilot|perplexity).\*$\`. It is our illustration, not Google's wording, so treat the list as a starting point. Google notes you should update the expression when URLs or the assistants you want to measure change.

### Put the channel above Referral

Traffic goes into the first channel whose definition it matches, so order matters. Google says to reorder the list so "AI assistants" sits above Referral. Select Reorder, drag the channel, select Apply, then select Save channel and Save group.

For ChatGPT on its own row, add a second channel with a ChatGPT-only pattern above the combined one. Standard properties allow two custom groups beyond the predefined one, and each group can hold 50 channels.

### Know what the new group does and does not change

Your custom group appears as a dimension in the Acquisition reports, in explorations, in custom reports and in audience conditions. Google's page says custom channel groups can be applied to reports retroactively, but they are not available in the BigQuery export schema.

If you make it your primary channel group, the new criteria apply from that point forward, and Google warns that deleting a custom group is irreversible.

## Read ChatGPT traffic in the report and in an exploration

With the group saved, return to the traffic acquisition report and choose the new group as the primary or secondary dimension. You will see an "AI assistants" row beside Organic Search, Direct and the others.

That one row answers how many visitors arrive as AI traffic from AI chatbots, and it gives you the detailed information to start analyzing user behavior.

For landing pages, use a free-form exploration. In Explore, under Start a new exploration, select the Free form template. Google's [free-form exploration page](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9327972) says you can arrange rows and columns, compare several metrics side by side and refine the table with segments and filters.

Put landing page in the rows, your custom channel group as a filter or segment, and sessions, engagement rate and key events as the values.

Now you can see which landing pages AI visitors reach, which is the page-level view of your AI visibility. Add event tracking for your key actions, such as form submissions, so the values show what visitors do.

## The metrics that matter, and how to calculate each

![AI traffic at the centre with six measures around it: sessions, share, engagement rate, key event rate, landing page concentration and month-over-month change, each with its formula in words.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/AEO/Optimization/ChatGPT%20Referral%20Traffic%20-%20How%20to%20Track%20It%20in%20GA4/ai-referral-ai-referral-scorecard-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=ai-referral-ai-referral-scorecard-blog-1600x900.png)

Keep the scorecard short. Six measures cover the volume, quality and direction of AI referral traffic. Google defines the engagement and key event measures in its report documentation, and the arithmetic examples below are illustrations only.

- **AI traffic sessions.** Sessions in your AI assistants channel for the period. Count the same period every time.
- **AI traffic share.** AI traffic sessions divided by all sessions. Illustration: 120 AI sessions out of 6,000 total is 2 percent.
- **Engagement rate.** Google defines it as engaged sessions divided by total sessions, where an engaged session lasts 10 seconds or longer, or has a key event, or has two or more page views.
- **Session key event rate.** Sessions with at least one key event divided by total sessions, as Google defines it. Compare AI visitors with organic search visitors.
- **Landing page concentration.** Sessions on your five busiest AI landing pages divided by all AI traffic sessions. A high share means a few pages carry your AI visibility.
- **Month-over-month change.** This month's AI traffic minus last month's, divided by last month's. Illustration: 150 against 120 is a 25 percent rise.

Report AI traffic beside traditional SEO traffic from organic search, and from social media platforms, using the analytics tools you already have, so you can see whether the groups of users behave alike.

Google notes that engagement rate is the inverse of bounce rate, so a higher engagement rate means a lower bounce rate. Whether AI-generated traffic engages more than traditional search traffic is something to test on your own data.

Treat these measures as direction, not proof. A small count can swing sharply with a handful of visits, so read the trend over several periods before you change what you publish.

## What GA4 cannot show you about ChatGPT visits

![Three stage cards, answer shown, click made and visit recorded, with the six places AI visits go missing in Google Analytics listed under the stage where each happens.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/AEO/Optimization/ChatGPT%20Referral%20Traffic%20-%20How%20to%20Track%20It%20in%20GA4/ai-referral-ai-visits-visible-hidden-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=ai-referral-ai-visits-visible-hidden-blog-1600x900.png)

Referral reporting only counts user clicks, meaning people who click through. AI chatbots give answers directly, which reduces clicks to websites, and ChatGPT answers many questions without sending anyone to a source.

Clicks from Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode sit outside the AI Assistant channel. OpenAI says responses that use web search may include citations, and that a reader can select one to open its source, so a citation is an opportunity for a visit, not a visit.

A visit also needs a readable referrer, which is the part of the request that names the referral source. Because Google assigns the AI Assistant channel only when the referrer matches its list, visits that arrive without one cannot match and are usually grouped elsewhere.

Google's tagging guidance describes how traffic that cannot be categorized shows as unassigned or direct. AI-generated traffic often falls into the dark traffic category, which means AI traffic can inflate your Direct numbers.

Self-reported answers fill part of the gap. Add a free-text question to your forms, such as "How did you hear about us?", and review answers that mention an assistant by name.

Our guide to [measuring AI search visibility](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/ai-search-analytics-measure-visibility) covers prompt tracking and the attribution gap in full, so this article stays on the GA4 side. Together they give you the complete picture of AI-driven traffic and influence.

Whether your pages can be cited at all comes first, since a page that is never cited sends no AI traffic. OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and our guide to [ChatGPT SEO](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/chatgpt-seo) covers how to get cited.

## Make the pages that earn AI visits easy to read

Tracking shows you which pages receive AI traffic. The pages themselves help too. Clear heading hierarchies, short lists and structured data make it easier for AI models to understand a page's context, and links from trusted sites support citation.

The goal is more referral traffic from AI platforms such as ChatGPT and other LLMs, so make the right source easy to pick: original research and clear sourcing help an AI tool cite a page. These are common recommendations, not guarantees.

## AI bots, agent traffic and human traffic are different things

Not every request that comes from AI tools is a person. OpenAI's [crawler documentation](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots) lists separate user agents. OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features, while ChatGPT-User may visit a page when a person asks ChatGPT a question.

Those automated requests are agent traffic and AI bots, and they belong in server logs, not in a referral report. Human traffic is the person who reads an answer and then clicks a link. Keep the two apart, or your counts of visitors will mix people with machines.

The scale of agent traffic is growing. DataDome's [AI Traffic Report for Q2 2026](https://datadome.co/threat-research/ai-traffic-report-q2-2026/) says its network processed 17.7 billion AI agent requests that quarter, a 45% increase on Q1.

The same report says ChatGPT accounted for upwards of 80% of all AI-driven referral traffic on that network, which is why ChatGPT earns its own row.

## Tag the links you control with UTM parameters

UTM codes help only on links you place yourself. Google's [URL builder page](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/10917952) lists utm\_source, utm\_medium and utm\_campaign as the parameters to always use. Its example is a source of summer-mailer, a medium of email and a campaign of summer-sale.

Use them for every referral link you share where AI-driven traffic might begin, such as a resource you send to an audience that uses AI tools, or links inside your own content strategy.

You do not control the link an assistant shows for your page. For the full method, read what a [UTM code](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/what-is-a-utm-code) is. Google's UTM guidance recommends one unique source per platform, so agree the naming list once and reuse it.

## A weekly, monthly and quarterly routine

Keep each pass short and write down one decision.

### Weekly: confirm the data is arriving

Check the AI assistants row for the last seven days, and scan the source and medium list for new values your pattern missed. Check that unassigned and direct traffic have not jumped, which can signal a tagging problem.

### Monthly: compare the same period and read the pages

Compare AI traffic, engagement rate and key event rate with the same period last month. Open your free-form exploration and list the AI landing pages. Note which pages gain, which lose and which were never reached. Review the regex for sources you should add.

### Quarterly: audit the setup

Review the channel group order, the regex and the UTM naming list. Compare GA4 numbers with prompt tracking and with self-reported answers. Read Google's channel definitions again, since the default AI Assistant list can change, and note which pages raise your AI visibility.

## Mistakes that make ChatGPT referral data unreliable

- **Leaving the channel below Referral.** Traffic goes to the first matching channel, so a Referral channel above yours will absorb the visits.
- **Counting AI bots as visits.** A crawler reading your page is not a person who clicked, so keep AI traffic from people apart from bot requests.
- **Treating all AI traffic as one thing.** Group the AI sources you can identify, then look at each one's landing pages and behavior.
- **Changing the definition mid-period.** Edit the regex and the comparison with last month stops being like for like. Log every change.
- **Treating the floor as the total.** Referral data misses people who read the answer and never clicked, so report it as a minimum.

## What you gain when this is done properly

With a reliable channel group and a short routine, you know how much AI traffic your site receives from AI answers and which pages earn it, so you can see where your AI visibility comes from.

### Sales hears the story behind the visit

Landing pages show what visitors from AI search read first. Sales can open a conversation with a prospect who arrived on a comparison page differently from one who arrived on a pricing page, and the self-reported answers add the missing context.

### Marketing sees which pages earn AI visits

Marketing can compare AI landing pages with organic ones, invest in the pages that already work and shape the content strategy around them, whether that means creating content or refreshing it. The channel group becomes a standing view, so each content update has a before and an after to measure.

### Customer success finds where customers look for help

Landing pages that receive AI driven referral traffic from existing customers show where they search for setup and usage answers. Customer success can then improve those pages before the same questions reach the support queue.

## Measure the AI sources you can see, and be honest about the rest

ChatGPT referral reporting in GA4 is a floor. It will never show every person influenced by an AI answer, so report it as a minimum and pair it with prompt tracking and self-reported answers.

Propello designs and builds connected go-to-market systems on HubSpot, including the reporting that connects marketing activity to revenue. If you want help deciding what to measure and how to connect it, an audit is the place to start.

## Frequently asked questions

How do I see AI referral traffic in GA4?

Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and look for the AI Assistant row in the default channel grouping. To separate ChatGPT from other sources, create a custom channel group in Admin under Data display, add a channel with a regular expression on the source, and place it above Referral.

What is referral traffic in Google Analytics?

Referral traffic is the set of visits that reach your site by following a link on another site or app. Google's default channel group classifies a visit as Referral when the medium is referral, app or link. AI assistants now have their own channel, so those visits are no longer counted as ordinary referrals.

Why is some ChatGPT traffic missing or labeled direct?

A visit joins the AI Assistant channel only when its referrer matches Google's list of assistants. A visit with no readable referrer cannot match, and traffic that cannot be categorized often appears as unassigned or direct. Treat your count as a minimum and add self-reported answers to your forms.

Can UTM codes track ChatGPT visits?

Only on links you place yourself, because UTM parameters are added to the URL you share. You do not control the link ChatGPT shows for your page, so source and medium reporting through a custom channel group is the main method. Use UTM codes for your own campaigns and keep naming consistent.

Is ChatGPT referral traffic the same as the ChatGPT referral program?

OpenAI has run limited promotional referral campaigns where eligible users share a referral link, invited people must meet qualifying requirements such as signing up, and self-referrals are prohibited. That is a different subject; this article covers visits from ChatGPT answers measured in GA4.
