If you lead marketing or revenue at a growing B2B company, the short answer is this: for AI search, brand mentions on pages you do not control show the stronger link to visibility, while backlinks still matter for Google rankings. Earn mentions first, then turn the best ones into links.

This article is for CEOs, founders, CROs and marketing leaders deciding where to spend a limited budget on brand visibility. You will get a plain definition of each term, what the best available studies show, a side-by-side table, decision rules, and a weekly routine for tracking both.

| **Brand Mention** A brand mention is any reference to your company, product or people on a page you do not control, whether or not that reference links back to your website. |
| --- |

| **Backlink** A backlink is a hyperlink on another website that points to a page on your own site, also called an inbound link. |
| --- |

## Brand mentions and backlinks reach AI answers by different routes

![Two overlapping groups, brand mentions and backlinks, with the linked mention as the shared region that counts as both.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/AEO/Decision/Brand%20Mentions%20vs%20Backlinks%20-%20What%20AI%20Search%20Engines%20Actually%20Count/mentions-vs-links-mentions-links-routes-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=mentions-vs-links-mentions-links-routes-blog-1600x900.png)

A backlink is a technical object. It is a link in the code of another page, and search engines can follow it from that page to yours. A brand mention is a piece of writing.

It is your name sitting inside a sentence, a review, a news article or a forum thread, with or without a link attached.

That difference explains most of what follows. A link is a signal a crawler can count. A mention is text that a reader, or an AI system, can understand.

### How search engines use backlinks

Google's documentation says it uses links for [page relevancy and discovery](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/links-crawlable). A crawler follows a link from one page to the next, and the visible link text, called anchor text, tells people and Google something about the page being linked to.

That is why links became the backbone of search engine optimization. Links pass authority from one site to another, which is one way search engines evaluate how far to trust a page. They also remain the way new pages are found, and a link from a respected site is still a form of endorsement.

### How AI systems use brand mentions

AI engines build an answer by reading text, then naming the companies that text associates with a topic. When several independent pages describe your company in the same way, an AI system has more reason to name you. When only your own site does, it has little to go on.

That is our reading of how the pieces fit, not a published formula. No AI engine has said it counts mentions the way a search engine counts links. Google itself says that [no additional requirements or special optimizations](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) are needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

### Linked mentions and unlinked mentions

A linked mention is a brand mention that also carries a backlink. An unlinked mention names you in plain text with no hyperlink. The two are not rivals. A linked mention counts in both columns, and every unlinked mention is a candidate for becoming one.

This is why the choice between brand mentions and backlinks is partly false. Most of the work that earns one earns the other, and your real question is which one you measure and prioritize.

## Why AI visibility depends on what is said across the web

AI visibility is how often an AI platform names your company when a buyer asks about your category. It is shaped by how AI responses are assembled: a model reads many pages on the same topic, and the names those pages repeat are the names it tends to give back.

When a buyer types a question into a chat interface, the AI generated answers draw on pages that discuss other brands in your category as well as yours. If none of those pages mention you, you are missing from the answer.

That is the practical meaning of AI search visibility, and it is built outside your own site.

Not every source carries equal weight. Established trade publications, respected review sites and other high authority sites are the kind of authoritative sources AI systems understand as reliable for a category, so one mention on a strong page can do more than a dozen on weak ones. That is our reading, not a measured rule.

Repeated mentions next to a subject also point toward topical authority, which helps search visibility as well as AI answers. Sentiment matters too. A mention that calls your product slow or outdated is still a mention, and an AI response can repeat it.

## What the studies say about brand mentions vs backlinks

Two dated studies compare mentions and links directly. Both measure correlation, which shows two things moving together and does not prove that one causes the other.

### Ahrefs: 75,000 brands and Google AI Overviews

In 2025 Ahrefs [studied 75,000 brands](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-overview-brand-correlation/) to see which factors line up with brand mentions in AI Overviews. Branded web mentions showed the strongest correlation, at 0.664, against 0.218 for the number of backlinks.

Brand anchors, meaning your brand name used as the clickable text of a link, came second at 0.527. Referring domains, the number of different websites linking to you, came in at 0.295.

Ahrefs also split brands into four groups by how often the web mentions them. [Brands in the top group averaged 169 AI Overview mentions](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-overview-brand-correlation/), more than ten times the 14 averaged by the next group down.

### Seer Interactive: 10,000 questions put to ChatGPT

In January 2025, Seer Interactive [ran 10,000 questions](https://www.seerinteractive.com/insights/what-drives-brand-mentions-in-ai-answers) through OpenAI's GPT-4o to see which brands came up. Page-one Google rankings showed a correlation of about 0.65 with brand mentions in the answers. Backlinks showed a weak or neutral effect.

Read the two studies together and they agree on direction. Being talked about, and ranking well for the question, lined up with being named. A raw count of links did not.

### What these studies do not prove

Neither study shows that adding mentions makes an AI engine name you. They use different engines, different samples and different methods, and Ahrefs states plainly that correlation is not causation.

Seer's finding also keeps backlinks in the picture. Rankings correlated with mentions, and links still help pages rank. So treat the numbers as a reason to rebalance, not to abandon link building.

## Where backlinks still earn their place

None of this retires link building. Backlinks and brand mentions support the same search strategy, and a quality backlink from a respected site remains one of the clearest signals of authority and trust that a search engine can read. Links that carry no nofollow or sponsored attribute are the ones that pass authority.

A single high-quality link can matter more than many weak ones, especially in competitive topics where rankings are hard to move. Pair the link with a page that deserves it, because relevant content is what lets a link do its work.

Some guides go further and call backlinks crucial for visibility in AI search. The studies above do not support that strong a claim: the correlation with AI answers was weak. The more careful reading is that links help you rank, and ranking is correlated with being named.

The two also feed each other. A healthy backlink profile tends to produce unlinked mentions as people discuss the sites that linked to you, and a strong run of mentions tends to lead to links.

Unlinked mentions build awareness and credibility, can lift branded search volume as more people look for your name, and signal entity recognition: a company that language models can recognize by name in plain text, with no link needed.

## Brand mentions and backlinks compared side by side

![A visibility core with four ways brand mentions and backlinks differ: how search engines use them, what AI answers do with them, how you earn them and the main risk of each.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/AEO/Decision/Brand%20Mentions%20vs%20Backlinks%20-%20What%20AI%20Search%20Engines%20Actually%20Count/mentions-vs-links-mentions-links-compared-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=mentions-vs-links-mentions-links-compared-blog-1600x900.png)

Both brand mentions and backlinks are signals that other websites vouch for you. They differ in what a machine can do with them and how you earn them. The table sets the main criteria next to each other.

| Criterion | Brand mention | Backlink |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What it is | Your name in text on another page, linked or not | A hyperlink on another site pointing to yours |
| What search engines do with it | Read as context; we found no Google documentation that lists unlinked mentions as a ranking factor | Followed for discovery and relevance, with the anchor text read |
| What AI systems do with it | Text they can learn from when describing a topic; the strongest correlation in the Ahrefs study | No special route; a weaker correlation in both studies |
| Referral traffic | Only if the mention links or readers search for you | Direct, because readers can click through |
| How you earn it | Original research, expert commentary, reviews, press coverage, community answers | Outreach, partnerships, [digital PR](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/digital-pr), resource pages and guest contributions |
| Main risk | Wrong or negative mentions spread unchecked | Paid or manipulative links break Google's spam policies |
| How you measure it | Alerts, manual checks and monitoring across the web | A link report from Google Search Console or another link index |
| Best used for | Brand visibility in AI answers and buyer trust | Rankings, discovery and referral traffic |

Read the last row as our reading, not a rule from any search company. Google's [spam policies](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/essentials/spam-policies) treat buying or selling links for ranking purposes as link spam, so paid links belong in the risk row and not in a growth plan.

Our guide to [AI search ranking factors](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/ai-search-ranking-factors) covers what the evidence does and does not show about the rest of the picture.

## Decision rules: which to put first

Choose by what your company is missing today. These rules are our reading of the evidence above and of your own data, not claims any engine makes.

### If AI engines never name your company, start with brand mentions

When buyers ask an AI tool about your category and your name does not appear, the gap is usually independent description. Our guide to [why your brand is missing from AI answers](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/ai-search-visibility-brand-missing) walks through the causes. Third-party mentions are the one most teams skip.

### If you already rank well but gain few referral visits, build links

Strong rankings with thin referral traffic point to a shortage of linked coverage. Prioritize pages that can earn a link from authoritative publications and authoritative sites, because a link is a direct path from a reader to you, and it can drive referral traffic that a plain mention cannot.

### If you have many unlinked mentions, convert the best ones

List the news outlets, review sites and partner pages that already name you without a link. Send the author a short, polite request. A friendly note costs less than a new campaign, and the mention already exists.

### If your coverage is thin, earn both with one asset

Original research, proprietary data and a quotable expert earn mentions and links in the same move. One well-built asset, published with its method, is worth more than two separate programs.

### If budget is tight, measure before you spend

Count your brand mentions and backlinks against two competitors that AI tools do name. The gap tells you which side is thinner. Do not buy links to close it, and do not pay for mentions disguised as editorial.

## How to earn brand mentions that AI engines can read

You cannot ask an AI engine to mention you. You can make it easier for independent sources to describe you, and for those sources to be found.

### Publish original research and proprietary data

A data point nobody else has is the easiest thing for a journalist or analyst to quote. Publish it on your own site with the method, so the writer can cite it correctly and an AI system can find the original.

### Run digital PR around a real story

Digital PR means earning coverage from news outlets, news sites and industry publications with something worth reporting, not buying placement. Good digital PR campaigns pair a point of view with evidence and a named spokesperson, and comment on industry trends your buyers already follow. A press release alone rarely carries a story.

### Get included in roundups and comparisons

Buyers read roundups, comparison pages and best-of lists, and being featured in them introduces you to new audiences. Pitch the author with a specific reason you belong, such as a result a reader could check.

### Show up where buyers ask questions

Review platforms, community forums and social media are places where your category is discussed in your buyers' own words. Answer questions with substance, say who you are, and avoid pasted promotion.

Honest participation earns positive mentions over time, and on social media platforms it earns more mentions than broadcasting does. Encouraging customers to leave reviews on third-party platforms adds more.

### Feature partners and other brands

Co-create content with partners and quote other brands and experts in your own pieces. Many will share the result, which earns social mentions and often a link. Treat it as part of content marketing and your existing marketing campaigns, not a separate program.

### Keep your own description consistent

Use the same company description everywhere you control, so that when others write about you their wording agrees. Our guide to [entity authority and the knowledge graph](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/knowledge-graph-seo-entity-authority) shows how.

## A weekly brand monitoring workflow keeps mentions and links in one view

![Mentions and links at the centre of a weekly loop with four stages: monitor, respond, earn and review.](https://www.finemediabw.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/AEO/Decision/Brand%20Mentions%20vs%20Backlinks%20-%20What%20AI%20Search%20Engines%20Actually%20Count/mentions-vs-links-mention-link-workflow-blog-1600x900.png?width=1600&height=900&name=mentions-vs-links-mention-link-workflow-blog-1600x900.png)

Tracking brand mentions does not need advanced tools to start.

To monitor brand mentions, a short routine across the web, your link report and a few AI tools shows whether your efforts are working.

It should track mentions on news sites, review platforms and social media, and you should keep a record each week so you can compare.

1. Set up alerts. Google Alerts lets you [create an alert](https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/4815696) that emails you when new results mention a topic, such as your company name or a product name. Add common misspellings.
2. Check your links. The [Links report in Search Console](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/9049606) shows top linking sites and top linked pages. Google notes that it is a sample, not a complete list.
3. Ask the AI tools. Put ten buyer questions to each of the AI platforms your buyers use, note whether your brand shows, and record the sources cited. Our guide to [measuring AI search visibility](https://www.finemediabw.com/blog/ai-search-analytics-measure-visibility) shows how to keep the log.
4. Log the gaps. Tag each mention as positive, neutral or wrong, and note which are linked. Over time, this historical data shows which sources actually move the answers.

Dedicated brand monitoring platforms can automate the first three steps once volume grows. Their key features are alerts, historical data and sentiment analysis, and they sit alongside your own log rather than replacing it. Start by hand, because the manual log teaches you what a useful mention looks like.

### The core metrics to report each month

Keep the report short. Five core metrics are enough.

- Volume: how many new mentions appeared, and how many came from sources you would be glad to be quoted by.
- Linked share: the portion of those mentions that carry a link.
- Sentiment: how many are positive, neutral or wrong.
- AI presence: how many of your buyer questions name you in the AI tools.
- Referral traffic: visits that arrived from linked coverage.

## What you gain when this is done properly

When you treat brand mentions and backlinks as one program with two measures, every team that touches the buyer benefits.

### Sales meets buyers who already know the name

When independent sources describe your company, buyers arrive with context. Sales spends less time explaining who you are and more time on fit, price and timing.

### Marketing gets one plan instead of two

One asset can earn coverage, links and AI mentions. Marketing stops funding a link team and a PR team that never compare notes, and the monthly report shows both measures side by side.

### Customer success gets trusted references

Reviews, partner pages and community answers also help current customers find proof that others use and trust you. That makes renewal and expansion conversations easier.

## Mentions open the door and links keep it open

Brand mentions and backlinks are not rivals. Mentions seem to matter most for AI search and for trust, links still help you rank and send readers, and the best coverage delivers both. Count each, fix the thinner side first, and use your own tests to confirm.

## Frequently asked questions

Are brand mentions better than backlinks?

For AI search, the studies we checked show a stronger correlation for mentions: Ahrefs found 0.664 for web mentions against 0.218 for backlinks. For Google rankings, links still matter. Neither study proves cause, so treat mentions as the first gap to fill and links as the support.

Do unlinked brand mentions help SEO?

We found no Google documentation that lists unlinked mentions as a ranking factor, so treat any direct ranking effect as unproven. They still help in other ways: readers see your name, AI systems can read the text, and each one is a chance to ask for a link.

Do backlinks matter for AI search?

Backlinks still help pages rank and be discovered, and Seer found rankings correlated with mentions in ChatGPT answers. But Seer found the direct effect of backlinks weak or neutral. Build links for search and referral traffic, not because an AI engine counts them.

How do I track brand mentions?

Create alerts for your company name and products in Google Alerts, review your link report in Search Console, and ask the AI tools your buyers use the same set of questions each week. Record where you appear, who is cited and whether each mention is positive or wrong.

How do I earn more brand mentions?

Publish original research with its method, pitch a real story to industry publications, answer buyer questions in the communities where they ask, and keep your company description consistent. Earning coverage takes months. Paid placement does not count as earned, and paid links break Google's spam policies.
